This document provides guidelines and specifies requirements for estimating the precision of rubber test methods by means of interlaboratory test programmes based on the procedures given in: — Method A using ISO 5725 (all parts); — Method B using ASTM D4483
Abstract
Overview
ISO 19983:2022 - Rubber - Determination of precision of test methods - provides international guidance and requirements for estimating the precision of rubber test methods using interlaboratory test programmes (ITPs). The standard prescribes two routes for precision estimation:
- Method A: based on ISO 5725 (all parts) to calculate repeatability, day-to-day repeatability, and reproducibility.
- Method B: based on ASTM D4483 to calculate day-to-day repeatability and reproducibility.
ISO 19983:2022 is intended for established rubber test methods and supports consistent, transparent precision assessment across laboratories and industries.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Interlaboratory test programme (ITP) design: planning, selection of materials (type 1/type 2), and volunteer laboratories experienced with the method.
- Precision metrics:
- Repeatability - same lab, same operator, short intervals (typically within a day).
- Day-to-day repeatability - same lab/operator/equipment across days (commonly 1–7 days).
- Reproducibility - different laboratories, operators and equipment.
- Procedures and calculations:
- Detailed methodologies for Method A (ISO 5725) and Method B (ASTM D4483), with normative annexes for calculations.
- Guidance on the number of replicates, variance components, pooled standard deviations, and relative precision values.
- Outlier detection and treatment: expanded guidance in clauses 6.8–6.9 and an informative Annex F example for Method B.
- Reporting requirements: required content of precision reports to ensure transparent dissemination of results.
- Normative references and symbols: cross-references to ISO 5725 parts, ISO 3534, and ASTM D4483; symbols and terminology for statistical analysis.
Practical applications and intended users
ISO 19983:2022 is used to:
- Establish or validate the precision of standardized rubber test methods.
- Support test method development, standardization, and revisions by technical committees.
- Provide laboratory accreditation bodies and quality managers with accepted statistical precision estimates for method performance.
- Inform manufacturers, R&D teams, and product conformity assessment groups when interpreting test variability and setting acceptance criteria.
Users: test laboratories, standards developers (ISO/TC 45 and others), rubber and elastomer manufacturers, quality and metrology professionals, and accreditation bodies.
