ISO 20028-2:2017 specifies the methods of preparation of test specimens and the standard test methods to be used in determining the properties of thermoplastic polyester moulding and extrusion materials. Requirements for handling test material and for conditioning both the test material before moulding and the specimens before testing are given. Procedures and conditions for the preparation of test specimens in a specified state and procedures for measuring properties of the materials from which these specimens are made are given. Properties and test methods which are suitable and necessary to characterize thermoplastic polyester moulding and extrusion materials are listed. The properties have been selected from the general test methods in ISO 10350‑1. Other test methods in wide use for or of particular significance to these moulding and extrusion materials are also included in this document, as are the designatory properties specified in ISO 20028-1 (viscosity number and tensile modulus of elasticity). In order to obtain reproducible and comparable test results, it is necessary to use the methods of specimen preparation and conditioning, the specimen dimensions and the test procedures specified herein. Values determined will not necessarily be identical to those obtained using specimens of different dimensions or prepared using different procedures.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 20028-2:2017 - Plastics - Thermoplastic polyester (TP) moulding and extrusion materials - Part 2 - defines the standardized procedures for preparing test specimens and determining the properties of thermoplastic polyester (TP) moulding and extrusion materials. The standard ensures reproducible, comparable test results by specifying specimen preparation (injection moulding), conditioning, and a suite of test methods appropriate to TP materials.
Key topics and requirements
- Specimen preparation: Injection-moulded specimens prepared in accordance with ISO 294-1; consistent processing conditions are required for reproducibility. ISO 20753 is used for specimen designations and dimensions.
- Material handling and drying: Material must be stored in moisture‑proof containers. Moisture limits before moulding: typically ≤ 0.02% by mass for most materials (special cases such as high-viscosity PET have tighter limits, e.g., < 0.01%). Use of hopper dehumidifiers or inert-gas blanketing is recommended.
- Injection-moulding conditions: The standard lists specific melt and mould temperatures, injection velocity, hold and cycle times for common TP types (examples: PBT unfilled semi‑crystalline - melt ~260 °C, mould ~80 °C; PET unfilled amorphous - melt ~285 °C, mould ~20 °C; PCT/PEN conditions are also given).
- Conditioning: Test specimens for mechanical, electrical and density tests shall be conditioned per ISO 291 for at least 16 h at 23 °C ± 2 °C and (50 ± 10) % relative humidity.
- Test methods and properties: Properties are selected from ISO 10350‑1 and other widely used methods. Relevant tests include:
- Mechanical: tensile modulus, yield stress, strain at break (ISO 527‑2), Charpy impact (ISO 179)
- Thermal: DSC glass transition and melting (ISO 11357‑2/3), heat deflection (ISO 75‑2)
- Rheological: MFR/MVR (ISO 1133‑2), viscosity number (ISO 1628‑5)
- Physical/other: density (ISO 1183 series), water absorption (ISO 62), ash content (ISO 3451‑2), flammability (IEC 60695‑11‑10)
- Electrical: permittivity, dissipation factor, volume/surface resistivity and electric strength (IEC standards)
- Note on comparability: Values are comparable only when the specified specimen dimensions, preparation and conditioning are used-different procedures can yield different results.
Applications and users
- Who uses it: Materials manufacturers, third‑party test laboratories, quality control teams, product designers, R&D engineers, procurement/specification writers, and regulatory bodies.
- Practical uses: Material certification and datasheet generation, comparative material selection, quality assurance/acceptance testing, failure analysis, and research on TP moulding/extrusion formulations.
