ISO 20053:2017 specifies materials, types, selection criteria and designation and marking of sorbents and data to be provided by manufacturer(s) for the sorbents. The purpose of ISO 20053:2017 is to assist manufacturers and facilitate users in selecting sorbents by technical criteria. It does not purport to address all aspects of sorbents or safety concerns associated with sorbent use, nor does it define sorbent operational procedures.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 20053:2017 - Ships and marine technology: Marine environment protection - Specifications on design and selection of sorbents - provides technical guidance for the design, selection, designation and marking of sorbents used in marine oil-spill response. The standard helps manufacturers and purchasers evaluate sorbent materials and products by defined technical criteria. It does not prescribe operational procedures or address every safety concern, nor does it cover loose/bulk sorbents for open-water use.
Key topics and technical requirements
ISO 20053:2017 defines material types, product forms and selection criteria for marine sorbents. Key technical topics include:
-
Sorbent materials and forms
- Synthetic organic (polypropylene, polyethylene, nylon, polyester, polyurethane foam)
- Natural organic (peat, cellulose, straw, wool, coconut husk, wood chips, etc.)
- Inorganic (expanded perlite, glass wool, vermiculite, volcanic ash)
- Forms: booms, pads/sheets, pillows, pom-poms, rolls/sweeps
-
Selection criteria
- Buoyancy: must float without oil for at least 3 days; when saturated with two oil types, must remain afloat for at least 6 days
- Oil retention: retain sorbed oil when removed from water
- Sorption capacity: expressed as g oil / g sorbent; viscosity of target oil is a primary factor (example test oils: 5 cSt for low viscosity, 3 000 cSt for high viscosity)
- Reusability: ability to be squeezed and reused (must avoid re-oiling)
- Biodegradability: guidance for biodegradable sorbents when recovery is difficult
- Disposal: prescribed final disposition options and material-specific disposal instructions
-
Manufacturer data and marking
- Required product information (dimensions, material, colour, form, buoyancy, oil retention, sorption capacity, reusability, biodegradability, disposal method, transport unit, weight/volume, safety instructions)
- Marking requirements (manufacturer name/address, form and dimensions, year of manufacture/expiry where applicable, transport unit weight)
Applications and users
ISO 20053 is practical for:
- Sorbent manufacturers designing and labeling marine sorbents
- Procurement officers and maritime purchasers selecting sorbent booms, pads, rolls
- Oil-spill response teams and environmental agencies specifying equipment for shoreline and surface recovery
- Ship operators and offshore facilities planning pollution-control kits
The standard improves product comparability and supports informed selection based on buoyancy, sorption capacity and disposal considerations.
