This document specifies a process for environmental performance evaluation of activities executed by a manufacturing system based on the general principles described in ISO 20140‑1. The process uses environmental performance evaluation data based on ISO 20140‑5. This document does not specify any evaluation process specific to particular implementations of manufacturing systems.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 20140-2:2018 - part of the ISO 20140 series on automation systems and integration - defines a structured environmental performance evaluation process for manufacturing systems. The standard specifies how to develop an evaluation specification, define and calculate environmental KPIs, and report results using aggregated EPE data (environmental performance evaluation data). It is applicable to discrete, batch and continuous manufacturing systems with hierarchical structures and focuses on energy efficiency and other environmental influences (e.g., energy consumption, waste, emissions). ISO 20140-2:2018 does not mandate implementation-specific evaluation methods.
Key topics and requirements
- Process framework: A four-step evaluation process - develop specification, specify environmental KPIs, calculate KPIs, and report results - forming the core workflow for environmental performance evaluation.
- Specification elements: Evaluation objectives, scope (physical and time boundaries), and requirements for aggregated EPE data must be defined up front.
- Environmental KPIs: KPIs are explicitly specified by formula, including the environmental influences to be considered, the calculation formulae, and constraints. KPIs normalize environmental influence using the concept of system value so different processes and products can be compared.
- Aggregated EPE data: The standard requires definition of the level of detail, measurement frequency and aggregation rules for the EPE data used to calculate KPIs. (ISO 20140-3 covers aggregation specifics; ISO 20140-5 defines EPE data structures.)
- Reporting: Results - KPI definitions, calculated values and interpretations relative to objectives - must be documented and reported to support benchmarking, improvement and decision making.
- Scope limits: ISO 20140-2:2018 provides the evaluation process and data requirements but does not prescribe capture mechanisms or implementation-specific procedures.
Applications and users
Practical uses of ISO 20140-2:2018 include:
- Benchmarking environmental performance of manufacturing systems or facilities.
- Comparing alternative designs or retrofit options (equipment replacement, scheduling changes).
- Setting measurable environmental targets (energy efficiency, emissions reduction).
- Visualizing performance under different production plans for continuous improvement.
Primary users:
- Production and environmental managers responsible for factory sustainability.
- Process, systems and automation engineers designing or optimizing manufacturing processes.
- Operations staff and foremen monitoring and reporting environmental KPIs.
