This document defines a set of environmental performance evaluation (EPE) data classes, including their properties. It is applicable to entire manufacturing facilities or to parts of a manufacturing facility. This document applies to manufacturing systems including discrete, batch and continuous control, which are defined in IEC 62264-1. The following are outside the scope of this document: - syntax of EPE data and data models; - protocols to exchange EPE data; - functions that can be enabled by the use of EPE data; - product life cycle assessment; - EPE data that are specific to a particular industry sector, manufacturer or machinery; - acquisition of EPE data.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 20140-5:2024, developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) in joint collaboration with ISO, is a critical international standard for automation systems and integration. This standard is part of the ISO 20140 series, which focuses on evaluating the energy efficiency and other environmental factors influencing manufacturing systems. Specifically, Part 5: Environmental performance evaluation data provides a formalized structure of environmental performance evaluation (EPE) data classes and their properties, offering a technology-independent framework applicable to various manufacturing environments.
This document is relevant for entire manufacturing facilities or specific sections within them, addressing discrete, batch, and continuous control systems as defined by IEC 62264-1. The main value of ISO 20140-5:2024 lies in its ability to harmonize the classification and management of environmental data, enhancing comparability, reporting, and environmental improvement activities across industries.
Key Topics
- Classification of EPE Data: ISO 20140-5:2024 defines a comprehensive set of EPE data classes with shared structures and properties. These classes standardize the way environmental data is organized and referenced within manufacturing environments.
- Properties of EPE Data Classes: The standard outlines specific properties (attributes) necessary for the consistent description and differentiation of EPE data, such as energy consumption, waste generation, emissions, and more.
- Contextual Flexibility: The EPE data class definitions are designed to support the association of environmental data with contextual information, enabling effective aggregation and exchange of data.
- Technology Independence: The approach allows mapping of EPE data classes to various technological implementations without being tied to a particular syntax, protocol, or industry.
- Structured Aggregation: The standard supports systematic aggregation of data for environmental performance evaluation, benchmarking, and continuous improvement.
Applications
Adopting ISO 20140-5:2024 brings practical advantages for organizations striving to manage and improve the environmental performance of their manufacturing systems:
- Benchmarking and Comparison: Manufacturers can benchmark environmental performance against reference systems or other facilities, enabling meaningful comparisons and industry best practices.
- Environmental Performance Management: Organizations gain a structured foundation for setting, tracking, and achieving environmental targets, including energy efficiency and waste reduction goals.
- Data Consistency: By following standardized EPE data classes and properties, companies ensure uniformity in environmental data collection and reporting, aiding in regulatory compliance and internal audits.
- Visualization and Monitoring: EPE data classes defined by the standard facilitate visualization and comprehensive analysis of environmental metrics within an operational context.
- Supply Chain Integration: The ability to manage and evaluate environmental performance data extends throughout supply chains, supporting initiatives such as the carbon footprint of products (CFP).
- Design and Engineering: System designers and engineers benefit from a unified schema for integrating environmental considerations into manufacturing process improvements and new system deployments.
Related Standards
ISO 20140-5:2024 is part of a broader framework of standards governing industrial automation, integration, and environmental management:
- ISO 20140-1: Overview and general principles for evaluating energy efficiency and related environmental factors in manufacturing.
- IEC 62264-1: Reference for manufacturing operations management, including system definitions compatible with ISO 20140-5.
- ISO 10303 (STEP): Industrial automation systems and integration - Product data representation and exchange.
- IEC 61360-4: Common Data Dictionary, providing referenced data structures for property definitions.
- ISO 14224: Collection and exchange of reliability and maintenance data, relevant for contextualizing EPE data in the process industries.
- ISO 11014: Safety data sheet for the content and order of information in chemical product safety assessments.
By aligning with ISO 20140-5:2024, manufacturers, system integrators, and designers can improve the consistency, comparability, and actionable value of environmental performance data across diverse manufacturing environments, supporting ongoing sustainability initiatives and regulatory requirements.
