This document specifies chromatographic methods for the determination of the inorganic free sulfur (Sx) not consumed during the vulcanization of the rubber. This method is used primarily to compare the free sulfur content in different samples. NOTE 1 In this document, "free sulfur" is used instead of "inorganic free sulfur". NOTE 2 The residual curing agent containing sulfur is not concerned by this measure.

The standard defines sample extraction, derivatization, chromatographic analysis (GC and HPLC) and calibration approaches for comparing free sulfur content across vulcanized rubber samples.

- Method B (HPLC/UV): HPLC with UV detection (wavelength 260 nm), C18-type column example, gradient elution using ammonium acetate buffer (pH 6.7) and acetonitrile, flow ~1 ml/min. Typical injected volume: 20 µl.
- Calibration and quantification
- Standard addition is the preferred calibration method to correct matrix effects and unknown sample matrices.
- External calibration can be used when matrix effects are absent.
- Calibration ranges and injected volumes are described and should be adapted to required quantification limits.

- Requirements include duplicated testing, precision assessment, and content for the test report (see Clauses 10–12 and informative annexes with chromatogram examples and precision data).
