This document defines, if needed, how to represent the situation features of an integral surface, or of a collection of integral surfaces, and how to identify them uniquely by an alphanumerical label in a technical product documentation (TPD). It also defines how to indicate the type of each situation feature or the type of each minimum set of situation features, and how to represent the positive direction of a situation feature. Annex A defines the cases where the representation of situation features is not required. Annex B defines how to represent the intrinsic mobilities inside a minimum set of situation features. Annex C defines the proportions and dimensions of the graphical symbols to be used.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 20223:2026 is an international standard developed by ISO, specifically focused on technical product documentation (TPD). This standard establishes uniform guidelines for the representation and unique identification of situation features associated with integral surfaces or groups of surfaces. Through the use of graphical symbols and alphanumerical labels, ISO 20223:2026 ensures that situation features, their types, and their positive directions are communicated effectively and unambiguously within TPD. The standard addresses requirements in both 2D drawings and 3D CAD models, enhancing clarity and traceability throughout the product lifecycle.
Key Topics
-
Situation Features Definition
A situation feature is a point, straight line, or plane that helps define the location (orientation or positioning) of a geometric feature within an assembly or part. -
Representation Rules
Detailed rules are provided on how to graphically represent situation features, minimum sets of situation features (including single, pairs, or complete sets), and their types using standardized symbols. -
Identification Scheme
Each situation feature or set of situation features is given a unique alphanumerical identifier. This label links the feature to its corresponding integral surface, enhancing traceability and communication. -
Positive Direction Indication
The standard specifies methods for representing the positive direction of situation features, an essential aspect for interpreting orientation and assembly information. -
Graphical Symbol Standardization
ISO 20223:2026 defines the proportions and dimensions of graphical symbols, ensuring clarity and consistency in their use across different TPD practices. -
Intrinsic Mobilities and Exemptions
Provisions are made for indicating intrinsic mobilities within a minimum set of situation features, and specific cases are noted where explicit representation is not required.
Applications
ISO 20223:2026 brings practical advantages to a range of engineering, manufacturing, and documentation scenarios:
-
Functional Design and CAD Modeling
By introducing standardized symbols and identification, the standard aids in clear communication of features within CAD environments, supporting CAD-vendor interoperability and automated traceability. -
Manufacturing and Quality Control
Clear and consistent representation of situation features facilitates unambiguous interpretation by manufacturing and inspection teams, reducing errors and rework. -
Geometrical Product Specifications (GPS)
Situation feature identifiers are used in conjunction with GPS standards (such as ISO 5459) to specify datums and coordinate systems, grounding geometric tolerances in precisely defined features. -
Documentation and Stakeholder Communication
Human-readable labels for situation features simplify oral and written communication among design, production, and verification teams, making technical discussions more efficient and less prone to misunderstanding. -
Complex Assembly Definition
In assemblies involving multiple integral surfaces, clear identification and representation of situation features streamline both documentation and the eventual measurement and assembly processes.
