ISO 20383:2017 specifies the dimensions, characteristics, and positioning of Speed Identification Signs (SIS). These signs indicate the maximum equipment ground speed, based on the ground speed design capability, for an agricultural vehicle. A rear-facing SIS is visible to other operators on public roads approaching the equipment from behind. A forward-facing SIS, mounted on the front of towed equipment, alerts operators of the towing vehicle of the maximum specified ground speed capabilities at which the equipment combination can be operated. ISO 20383:2017 is applicable to self-propelled, semi-integral and towed equipment moving on public roads.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 20383:2017 is an international standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that specifies the design and placement of Speed Identification Signs (SIS) for tractors and machinery used in agriculture and forestry. These signs indicate the maximum ground speed that the equipment is designed to safely operate at, ensuring clear communication between operators of agricultural vehicles and other road users when these machines move on public roads. The standard applies to self-propelled, semi-integral, and towed agricultural and forestry equipment.
The SIS aids in promoting road safety by clearly stating the maximum allowed speed based on the equipment’s design capabilities, considering factors such as tire capacity, stability, braking, and tracking. ISO 20383:2017 enhances operational safety during transport, especially when agricultural machinery travels on public infrastructure between fields, farmsteads, or transport hubs.
Key Topics
-
Sign Dimensions and Design
The Speed Identification Sign is circular with a diameter of 200 mm ± 2 mm. It features a black border 10 mm wide, inset by 5 mm from the edge, with a white central field. The maximum designed ground speed is displayed in black numerals, rounded to the nearest 5 km/h or mph increment, accompanied by unit text centered beneath the number. -
Colour and Materials
SIS materials must be durable in outdoor conditions without cracking, fading, or loss of adhesion over a minimum 24-month exposure to natural weathering. Adhesive properties must comply with specified peel strengths for reliable mounting, and strict chromaticity coordinate values ensure visibility and compliance with road sign color standards. -
Sign Positioning
- Rear-facing SIS: Mounted on the rear of agricultural vehicles, visible to operators approaching from behind on public roads. It should be positioned 0.6 to 3 meters above ground level, upright within ±10° on the y- and z-axis, preferably to the right of the vehicle centerline, and unobscured for daytime and nighttime visibility.
- Forward-facing SIS: Mounted on the front of towed equipment, visible from the towing vehicle operator’s platform. Its size ranges from 25% to 100% of the rear-facing SIS dimensions, maintaining proportional character sizing.
-
Towed Equipment Combinations
Only the rear SIS of the last machine in a towed combination is required to be visible from behind, while the forward SIS is needed for the lead towed machine. The maximum operational speed of towed equipment combinations is limited to the lowest specified ground speed among the machines. -
Operational Guidance
Operator manuals must specify the maximum travel speed, which is governed by the lesser of road conditions, tractor speed, and the ground speed limitation indicated by the SIS for the vehicle and towed equipment.
Applications
ISO 20383:2017 is critical for manufacturers and operators of agricultural and forestry machinery to ensure compliance with safety regulations during road transport operations. Key applications include:
- Manufacturer Compliance: Ensuring that machinery is properly marked with SIS to communicate speed limitations, helping buyers and users operate equipment safely.
- Road Safety Enhancement: Assisting drivers of agricultural and forestry vehicles in adhering to safe speeds, reducing risks of accidents caused by operating equipment beyond design speeds on public roads.
- Operator Information: Providing clear, standardized speed identification to operators towing implements, facilitating safe transport and avoiding mechanical damage or instability due to excessive speeds.
- Regulatory Alignment: Helping governments and standard bodies enforce consistent speed signaling on agricultural equipment, aligned with public road safety protocols.
Related Standards
- ISO 2810: Paints and varnishes - Natural weathering of coatings - Exposure and assessment, relevant for testing SIS material durability outdoors.
- ISO 29862:2007: Self-adhesive tapes - Determination of peel adhesion properties, applicable to the adhesive requirements for SIS attachment.
- ASTM D3330/D3330M and PSTC 101: Equivalent adhesion test methods referenced for material adhesive performance evaluation.
ISO 20383:2017 ensures clear, standardized identification of speed limits for agricultural and forestry machinery on public roads. Its adoption supports operational safety, regulatory compliance, and effective communication among machinery operators and other road users.
