This part of ISO 2039 specifies a method for determining the hardness of plastics and ebonite by means of a loaded ball indenter. The ball indentation hardness determined by this method may provide data for research and development, quality control and acceptance or rejection under specifications.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 2039-1:2001 specifies the ball indentation method for determining the hardness of plastics and ebonite. This internationally recognized standard by ISO provides a precise procedure to measure the hardness by pressing a loaded steel ball indenter into the material surface and calculating hardness based on the indentation. The results are essential for research and development, quality control, and to decide acceptance or rejection of plastic materials under defined specifications.
This third edition of ISO 2039-1 refines earlier versions, ensuring accuracy and repeatability when testing polymers' mechanical properties through hardness assessment.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Principle
The method applies to plastics and ebonite using a steel ball indenter of 5 mm diameter under specific loads. Hardness is calculated by the ratio of applied load to the contact area of the indentation. The indentation depth under load is measured with high precision, allowing the calculation of ball indentation hardness, expressed in newtons per square millimeter (N/mm²). -
Testing Equipment
Key apparatus includes a hardness testing machine with:- A rigid frame and adjustable platform
- A polished, hardened steel ball indenter (5.0 ± 0.05 mm diameter)
- A high-precision depth measurement device (± 0.005 mm accuracy)
- A load application system free from impact or shock
- A timer with ±0.1 s precision to ensure consistent load duration
-
Specimen Preparation
Test specimens typically are smooth plastic plates, around 20 mm by 20 mm and 4 mm thick. Parallel faces and sufficient area are required to avoid edge effects. When samples are thinner, stacking specimens is allowed with caution regarding potential result variation. -
Testing Procedure
- Condition specimens according to ISO 291 (standardized atmospheres).
- Apply a small preload (approx. 9.8 N) to ensure contact.
- Apply the main test load (49.0 N, 132 N, 358 N, or 961 N) smoothly over 2-3 seconds and maintain for 30 seconds.
- Measure penetration depth under load, correcting for machine deformation.
- Repeat for at least ten valid indentations to obtain reliable average hardness values.
-
Calculations and Reporting
Ball indentation hardness (HB) is calculated using specific formulas involving corrected load and penetration depth. The standard also provides guidance on rounding results and detailed reporting requirements, including specimen details, testing conditions, and statistical data like standard deviation.
Applications
-
Material Research and Development
Provides fundamental hardness data crucial for developing new plastics with desired mechanical properties. -
Quality Assurance and Control
Ensures consistent material behaviour by verifying hardness against specifications during manufacturing or before market release. -
Compliance and Acceptance Testing
Enables objective criteria for product approval or rejection based on hardness measurements. -
Comparative Analysis
Useful for comparing different grades or batches of plastics and ebonite materials under standardized test conditions. -
Product Performance Evaluation
Hardness data informs performance characteristics such as wear resistance, durability, and load-bearing capacity.

Summary
ISO 2039-1:2001 defines a rigorous and standardized method-the ball indentation method-to accurately measure the hardness of plastics and ebonite. Applying this standard enhances reliability in material characterization, supports quality control processes, and fosters innovation in polymer development. Companies and laboratories testing plastic materials can leverage ISO 2039-1 to ensure consistent, repeatable, and recognized hardness measurements worldwide.
