ISO 20400:2017 provides guidance to organizations, independent of their activity or size, on integrating sustainability within procurement, as described in ISO 26000. It is intended for stakeholders involved in, or impacted by, procurement decisions and processes.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 20400:2017 - Sustainable procurement - Guidance is an international guidance standard that helps organizations of any size or sector integrate sustainability in procurement. It is a non‑prescriptive, voluntary framework aligned with ISO 26000 (social responsibility) and supports organizations in using procurement to manage environmental, social and economic impacts while contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Key parts of the standard describe what sustainable procurement is, why it matters, and how to embed sustainability across procurement policy, strategy, organization and process (see Clauses 4–7).
Key topics and technical focus
ISO 20400 covers practical topics procurement teams need to address:
- Fundamentals and principles - definition of sustainable procurement, core subjects and drivers (Clause 4).
- Risk and due diligence - managing sustainability risk and opportunities, addressing adverse impacts through due diligence, and avoiding complicity.
- Policy & strategy integration - committing to sustainable procurement, clarifying accountability and aligning procurement with organizational objectives (Clause 5).
- Organizing procurement for sustainability - governance, procedures, performance management, culture, stakeholder engagement and training (Clause 6).
- Procurement process guidance - integrating sustainability in planning, specifications, supplier selection, contracting, contract management, supplier performance and end‑of‑life considerations (Clause 7).
- Measurement and continual improvement - defining metrics, reporting, benchmarking and establishing grievance mechanisms.
- Informative annexes include sustainable procurement issues, an overview of ISO 26000, and examples of issue‑based approaches.
Practical applications
ISO 20400 is practical for organizations seeking to adopt or improve sustainable sourcing practices and to reduce supply‑chain risk while driving value and innovation. Typical uses include:
- Developing or updating a sustainable procurement policy and sourcing strategy.
- Designing supplier prequalification and supplier selection that include social and environmental criteria.
- Implementing due diligence processes to identify and mitigate adverse impacts (human rights, labour, environment).
- Incorporating sustainability requirements into contracts, managing supplier performance, and planning end‑of‑life/disposal.
- Establishing KPIs, reporting and stakeholder engagement programs to demonstrate progress.
