ISO 20462-1:2005 is part of a three-part standard pertaining to the subjective evaluation of pictorial still image quality. ISO 20462-1:2005 defines the units by which image quality is quantified (just noticeable differences, or JNDs); describes the influence of stimulus properties, observer characteristics, and task instructions on results obtained from rating experiments; and provides a flow chart for choosing the preferred psychophysical method for determining image quality from among those defined in subsequent parts of ISO 20462.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 20462-1:2005 - "Photography - Psychophysical experimental methods for estimating image quality - Part 1: Overview of psychophysical elements" is the introductory part of a three‑part ISO standard for the subjective evaluation of pictorial still image quality. It defines how image quality is quantified in psychophysical experiments, introduces the unit of measurement (just noticeable differences, JNDs), and summarises the experimental elements (stimuli, observers, instructions, viewing conditions) needed to produce reproducible, calibrated image‑quality data. The document also provides a decision flowchart to select between the psychophysical methods described in Parts 2 and 3 (Triplet comparison and Quality ruler methods).
Key topics and requirements
- JND definition and interpretation: A JND is tied to a 75:25 response proportion in paired comparison tasks; the standard distinguishes between attribute JNDs (detectability of a single attribute) and quality JNDs (significance in overall image quality).
- Psychophysical methods overview: Describes paired comparison, magnitude estimation, categorical sort, rank ordering and notes method strengths/limitations (e.g., paired comparisons require N(N−1)/2 tests; responses saturate beyond ~1.5 JNDs).
- Experimental specification: Requirements for documenting observer characteristics, stimulus properties, instructions, viewing conditions (see normative reference ISO 3664), experimental duration, and reported results.
- Data interpretation guidance: Annexes cover selection of methods (Annex A), relationship between stimulus differences, paired comparison proportions and JNDs (Annex B), example reporting (Annex C), and method comparisons (Annex D).
- Reporting: Standardised quantities and documentation are specified to support comparability between experiments.
Practical applications
- Quantifying and comparing image quality of cameras, scanners, displays, printers and image‑processing algorithms.
- Calibrating subjective scales so experimental outcomes can be expressed in JND units, enabling comparison across labs, devices and studies.
- Informing product design decisions and acceptance criteria for imaging systems where perceptual quality matters.
- Supporting research in color science, vision science, imaging engineering and human‑factors studies.
Who should use this standard
- Imaging scientists, psychophysicists and vision researchers
- Camera, display and printer manufacturers and QA teams
- Image‑processing and computational photography engineers
- Standards bodies and test labs conducting subjective image‑quality assessments
