This document specifies the components and structure, general requirements, and functional requirements of grab dredger supervisory and control systems. It is applicable only to the installed components, functions or systems. It covers the design, manufacture and modifications.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 20663:2020 specifies the components, structure, general requirements and functional requirements for grab dredger supervisory and control systems (GD‑SCS). Applicable to installed components, functions and systems, the standard covers design, manufacture and modifications for integrated GD‑SCS installations. The GD‑SCS typically comprises two integrated subsystems: a SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) and a DPM (dredging profile monitor).
Key Topics
- Components and structure
- The GD‑SCS is an integrated system combining SCADA and DPM, connected via wired or wireless networks to collectors, controllers and operator stations located in the control room or operator cabin.
- Operating positions and control modes
- The system should provide a local operating position and, where required, a remote position.
- Control modes include manual control (handles/buttons/HMI) and an emergency hard‑wired mode for equipment affecting safety.
- External communication and interfaces
- Interfaces should include vessel position and heading systems and tide measurement to support accurate dredging guidance.
- Diagnostics and HMI
- The GD‑SCS must supply diagnostic information for failures such as start/stop control, operating position transfer and control mode shifts.
- Human‑machine interface (HMI) graphical conventions are defined, including alarm colour levels (e.g., red = danger, yellow = warning), colour usage guidance and brightness adjustments (including a night mode for bridge displays).
- Functional requirements
- The SCADA must control crane functions, grab open/close and provide emergency stop; it must monitor slew angle, boom angle, dredging depth and grab opening value in real time.
- The DPM must display the vessel position and heading plus grab bucket position and depth in data and profile views; it should provide configurable interfaces to positioning and tidal receivers.
- Calibration procedures are specified in principle, for example resetting dredging depth to zero when the bucket touches the water surface and resetting opening value when fully closed.
Applications
ISO 20663:2020 is intended for OEMs, shipyards, system integrators and operators involved in the design, manufacture, integration and modification of grab dredger control systems. Practical benefits include:
- Improved operational safety through formalized control modes and emergency provisions.
- Enhanced situational awareness via integrated SCADA and DPM visualisation (plan/profile views and numeric displays).
- Standardized diagnostics and HMI conventions that support operator training and consistent alarm handling.
