This document describes the orthographic system of the Akson-Thai-Noi script using Romanized characters. This document can be used by anyone who has a clear understanding of the system and is certain that it can be applied without ambiguity. The result obtained will not give a correct pronunciation of the original text in a person's own language, but it will serve as a means of finding automatically the original graphism and thus allow anyone who has a knowledge of the original language to pronounce it correctly. NOTE Similarly, one can only pronounce correctly a text written in, for example, English or Polish, if one has a knowledge of English or Polish.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 20674-1:2019 - Information and documentation - Transliteration of scripts in use in Thailand - Part 1: Transliteration of Akson‑Thai‑Noi - defines a Romanization (transliteration) system for the Akson‑Thai‑Noi script. The standard describes orthographic rules and a conversion alphabet that represent Akson‑Thai‑Noi characters with Latin‑script equivalents. The system is designed to be stringent, unambiguous and reversible, enabling automatic reconstruction of the original graphism even if the Romanized output does not reflect exact pronunciation.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and purpose: formal romanization of Akson‑Thai‑Noi for information exchange, cataloguing and machine processing; not intended as a pronunciation guide.
- Principles of conversion: clear distinction between transliteration (reversible) and transcription (phonetic); priority given to stringent transliteration for univocal reversibility.
- Orthographic rules: detailed handling of consonants, vowels, tone markers, special symbols and digits specific to Akson‑Thai‑Noi.
- Combining marks and combining characters: rules for diacritics and marks that modify base characters.
- Arrangement and typing sequence: specification of character order and recommended input/typing sequences to ensure consistent transliteration and retransliteration.
- Romanization table: prescriptive mapping table of Akson‑Thai‑Noi characters to Latin equivalents to enable exact retransliteration.
- Reversibility requirement: transliteration scheme must permit automatic regeneration of the original script without ambiguity.
- Compatibility guidance: selection of Latin characters aligns where possible with ISO 11940 (Standard Thai transliteration) to maintain consistency across Thai-related romanization.
Practical applications and users
ISO 20674-1:2019 is intended for professionals and systems that need reliable, machine‑processable conversions of Akson‑Thai‑Noi text:
- Libraries, archives and museums - cataloguing manuscripts and inscription transcriptions.
- Bibliographic and metadata systems - consistent indexing, sorting and retrieval.
- Digital preservation and OCR workflows - converting historical palm‑leaf and inscription texts into searchable records.
- Academic researchers and linguists - accurate interchange of textual data for philology and regional studies.
- GIS, toponymy and publishing - standard romanization for place names and printed materials.
- Software developers and data engineers - implementing reversible transliteration routines for multilingual systems.
Related standards
- ISO 11940 - transliteration of Standard Thai (used for consistency where applicable).
