This part of ISO 20765 specifies a method of calculation for the volumetric and caloric properties of natural gases, natural gases containing synthetic admixture and similar mixtures, at conditions where the mixture can exist only as a gas. The method is applicable to pipeline-quality gases within the ranges of pressure and temperature at which transmission and distribution operations normally take place. For volumetric properties (compression factor and density), the uncertainty of calculation is about ± 0,1 % (95 % confidence interval). For caloric properties (for example enthalpy, heat capacity, Joule-Thomson coefficient, speed of sound), the uncertainty of calculation is usually greater.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 20765-1:2005 specifies a rigorous method to calculate thermodynamic properties of natural gas in the gas phase, targeting transmission and distribution conditions. The standard defines a Helmholtz free‑energy based approach that produces volumetric properties (compression factor Z, density) and caloric properties (enthalpy, heat capacities, Joule–Thomson coefficient, speed of sound, etc.) for pipeline‑quality natural gases and similar mixtures that exist only as a gas.
Key facts:
- Applicable to pipeline‑quality gases within normal transmission and distribution temperature and pressure ranges.
- Uses a detailed molar composition (a 21‑component analysis or reassignment of trace components).
- Volumetric properties: calculation uncertainty ≈ ±0.1% (95% confidence).
- Caloric properties: uncertainty generally larger and depends on inputs.
Key topics
- Thermodynamic basis: formulation of the Helmholtz free energy as sum of an ideal‑gas part and a residual (real‑gas) part. This enables consistent derivation of all thermodynamic properties via analytical derivatives.
- Residual term: based on the AGA8 equation of state recast into Helmholtz form to compute non‑ideal behaviour (compression factor and density).
- Ideal‑gas term: derived from isobaric heat capacity formulations integrated to give the ideal‑gas Helmholtz free energy.
- Input variables and conversions: standard assumes composition plus temperature and density; when pressure is supplied, conversion to density is required.
- Component analysis: recommends representation of all components ≥ 50 molar ppm and a 21‑component scheme for typical natural gases.
- Uncertainty and reporting: procedures to assess uncertainty (including influence of input variable uncertainty) and standardized reporting of results.
- Implementation aids: normative annexes include symbols/units, ideal and residual Helmholtz formulations; informative annexes provide assignment of trace components, implementation guidance and examples.
Applications
ISO 20765-1:2005 is intended for use where accurate thermodynamic property calculations are required for gas transmission and distribution:
- Pipeline flow and measurement calculations (billing, custody transfer)
- Pipeline hydraulics and compressor station design
- Gas metering and volume conversion (temperature/pressure compensation)
- Process simulation and modelling tools for gas networks
- Safety and acoustic analyses (speed of sound)
Who will use it:
- Pipeline engineers and operators
- Gas measurement and custody transfer specialists
- Laboratory analysts performing detailed gas composition analysis
- Software developers of gas simulation and flow‑calculation packages
- Regulators and standards bodies setting measurement practices
Related standards
- ISO 12213-2 (calculation of compression factor using composition)
- ISO 31-3 / ISO 31-4 (quantities and units)
- ISO 7504, ISO 14532 (gas analysis and vocabulary)
Practical note: ISO 20765‑1 is focused exclusively on single‑phase gas conditions; other parts of ISO 20765 (under preparation) extend to liquids, dense fluids and two‑phase equilibria.
