This document specifies general requirements and definitions for the gas dosage unit when not combined with the gas injection device (a liquefied petroleum gas fuel component), intended for use on the types of motor vehicles defined in ISO 3833. It also provides general design principles and specifies requirements for instructions and marking. This document is applicable to vehicles (mono-fuel, bi-fuel or dual-fuel applications) using gaseous fuels in accordance with ISO 9162. It is not applicable to the following: a) fuel containers; b) stationary gas engines; c) container mounting hardware; d) electronic fuel management; e) refuelling receptacles. It is recognized that miscellaneous components not specifically addressed herein can be examined for compliance with the criteria of any applicable part of the ISO 20766 series, including testing to the appropriate functional tests. All references to pressure in this document are considered gauge pressures unless otherwise specified. This document applies to device which have a service pressure in the range of 110 kPa (butane rich at 20 °C) and 840 kPa (propane rich at 20 °C), hereafter referred to in this document. Other service pressures can be accommodated by adjusting the pressure by the appropriate factor (ratio).
Abstract
Overview
ISO 20766-17:2022 sets forth the international standard for gas dosage units in liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) fuel systems used in road vehicles. This standard is part 17 of the ISO 20766 series, focusing specifically on LPG gas dosage units when they are not combined with a gas injection device. It applies to vehicles defined under ISO 3833, including mono-fuel, bi-fuel, and dual-fuel motor vehicles that operate with gaseous fuels in accordance with ISO 9162.
Designed to ensure safety, performance, and reliability, ISO 20766-17:2022 establishes general requirements, design principles, and marking instructions for these components. The standard covers devices operating at service pressures ranging from 110 kPa (butane-rich) to 840 kPa (propane-rich) at 20 °C, with allowances for other pressures through appropriate adjustments.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Applicability
The document excludes LPG fuel containers, stationary gas engines, container hardware, electronic fuel management systems, and refuelling receptacles. It focuses exclusively on gas dosage units used in LPG-powered vehicles. -
Marking Requirements
Gas dosage units must have clear, durable markings, including:- Manufacturer’s name or trademark
- Model or part number
- Working pressure and temperature range
- Year and month of manufacture
Optional markings may include flow direction, fuel type, electrical ratings, certification symbols, type approval numbers, and references to the standard.
-
Design and Construction
Key construction principles incorporate:- Withstanding maximum operating pressures and temperature ranges
- Electrical insulation to prevent sparks in case of component failure
- Fail-safe valve operation ensuring closed positions when power is off
- Compatibility with heat exchange media and pressure resistance up to 200 kPa
- Prevention of excessive pressure buildup in low-pressure parts without venting into vehicle compartments
-
Testing and Performance
The standard mandates rigorous testing procedures aligned with ISO 20766-2, including:- Hydrostatic strength testing at 2.25 times working pressure
- Leakage tests at extreme temperatures (up to 120 °C and down to -40 °C) and 150% working pressure
- Compatibility assessments for non-metallic materials with LPG and heat exchange fluids
- Corrosion resistance evaluations to confirm component durability in operational conditions
Applications
ISO 20766-17:2022 is essential for manufacturers, suppliers, and service providers involved in the design, production, and maintenance of LPG fuel systems for road vehicles. This standard ensures that gas dosage units in LPG-powered vehicles:
- Deliver precise gas regulation for optimized engine performance
- Maintain safety under varying temperature and pressure conditions
- Comply with international quality and safety requirements for LPG automotive components
- Support the growing market of alternative fuel vehicles, including mono-fuel and dual-fuel models
This standard facilitates compliance with global regulations and promotes consistency in safety and efficiency across LPG vehicle fuel systems.
Related Standards
ISO 20766-17:2022 is part of the broader ISO 20766 series, which covers multiple components of LPG fuel systems. Relevant related standards include:
- ISO 20766-1: General requirements and definitions for LPG fuel system components
- ISO 20766-2: Performance and general test methods for LPG system components
- ISO 3833: Vehicle types and terms for road vehicles
- ISO 9162: Specifications for gaseous fuels in automotive applications
These standards collectively provide comprehensive guidelines ensuring safe design, manufacturing, and testing of LPG fuel system components for road vehicles worldwide.
For industry professionals, adhering to ISO 20766-17:2022 enhances the safety, reliability, and global compatibility of LPG gas dosage units, supporting sustainable and efficient automotive fuel solutions.
