This document specifies general requirements and definitions of liquefied petroleum gas fuel components (fuel selection system and electrical installations, intended for use on the types of motor vehicles as defined in ISO 3833). It also provides general design principles, and specifies requirements for instructions and marking. This document is applicable to vehicles (mono-fuel, bi-fuel or dual-fuel applications) using gaseous fuels in accordance with ISO 9162. It is not applicable to the following: a) fuel containers; b) stationary gas engines; c) container mounting hardware; d) refuelling receptacles. It is recognized that miscellaneous components not specifically addressed herein can be examined for compliance with the criteria of any applicable part of the ISO 20766 series, including testing to the appropriate functional tests. All references to pressure in this document are considered gauge pressures unless otherwise specified. This document applies to devices which have a service pressure in the range of 110 kPa (butane rich at 20 °C) and 840 kPa (propane rich at 20 °C), hereinafter referred to in this document. Other service pressures can be accommodated by adjusting the pressure by the appropriate factor (ratio).

ISO 20766-5:2023 provides definitions and general requirements for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) fuel selection systems and electrical installations used on road vehicles (as defined in ISO 3833). The standard applies to mono‑fuel, bi‑fuel and dual‑fuel vehicle applications using gaseous fuels in accordance with ISO 9162. It specifies design principles, marking and instructions, and identifies mandatory tests and performance criteria for safe, reliable operation within the service pressure range of 110 kPa to 840 kPa.

Tests
ISO 20766-5 references required tests and criteria, many of which are performed per ISO 20766-2. Notable tests and acceptance criteria included in the document:
- Continued operation: 50 000 switching operations at room temperature with cycles apportioned 80% ambient, 10% at -40 °C and 10% at 85 °C; successful completion requires passing the insulation resistance test.
- Vibration resistance: Components with moving parts or printed circuit boards must remain undamaged and operational while powered during vibration tests.
- Temperature cycle: 96‑hour cycles between minimum and maximum operating temperatures with 120 min cycle time; component must be in working condition and meet insulation criteria afterward.
- Insulation resistance: Apply 500 V d.c. for 60 s; minimum allowable resistance 240 kΩ.
- Minimum operating voltage: ≤ 8 V for 12 V systems and ≤ 16 V for 24 V systems while in working condition.
