This document provides a method for quantification of trace levels of heavy metals in cosmetic products. This document refers only to chromium, cobalt, nickel, arsenic, cadmium, antimony and lead. The methodology can apply to other elements, however, it is the responsibility of the analyst to demonstrate that it fits that purpose.

ISO 21392:2021 specifies a validated analytical method for quantifying trace levels of heavy metals in finished cosmetic products using the ICP‑MS / ICP‑MS technique after pressure‑assisted digestion. The standard covers seven target elements - chromium (Cr), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), antimony (Sb) and lead (Pb) - and describes sample digestion, instrument setup, calibration, quality control and method performance evaluation.
