This document specifies the management principles and procedures implemented at the execution stage under the framework of life cycle management specified by ISO 22040.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 22040-3:2025 - Life cycle management of concrete structures - Part 3: Execution stage specifies management principles and procedures to be implemented during the execution (construction) stage as part of the ISO 22040 life cycle management (LCM) framework. The standard defines what execution-related information to record, how to plan and inspect works to achieve the intended service life, and how to transfer execution data to later life‑cycle stages (use, end‑of‑life, design). It emphasizes PDCA (plan‑do‑check‑act), safety, environmental management and data continuity for maintenance, reuse and recycling.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Execution and inspection planning
- Formulate an execution plan and inspection plan that secure safety during construction and satisfy service life objectives (referencing ISO 15686).
- Confirm execution methods meet design assumptions.
- Execution information (what to record)
- Execution plan and specifications
- Materials: records of materials used and their properties
- Details of execution: technical data, supplementary instructions, construction photographs
- Meteorological data: weather on placing and curing periods
- Quality control records: based on the quality control plan
- Inspection records: supervisor inspection data and final inspection reports
- Environmental management records: per ISO 13315 series
- Repair records: location, time, materials and methods when repairs are performed
- Indicators for LCM
- Establish measurable indicators across social, environmental, and economic aspects to assess lifecycle scenarios and decision making.
- Information transfer and storage
- Transfer execution information to use, end‑of‑life and structural planning/design stages.
- Maintain documented records and ensure accessibility for owners, maintenance teams and future stakeholders.
- Conformance references
- Execution work should align with ISO 2394 (reliability), ISO 19338 (performance requirements), ISO 22965‑2 and ISO 22966 (execution and materials).
Practical applications and users
- Who uses it: contractors, construction supervisors, structural designers, asset managers, facility owners, maintenance teams, environmental managers, and regulators.
- Use cases:
- Ensuring construction methods and materials meet design service‑life assumptions.
- Creating inspection and quality control regimes to reduce defects and extend durability.
- Documenting execution data for maintenance planning, lifecycle cost analysis and end‑of‑life recycling or reuse.
- Supporting sustainability reporting by recording environmental management actions and impacts.
- Facilitating handover of comprehensive execution records to owners and future designers.
