ISO 22159:2007 specifies requirements, test methods, marking and information to be supplied by the manufacturer for descending devices. It also specifies some basic requirements for the descent lines to be used with the descending devices. ISO 22159:2007 is applicable to automatic and manually operated descending devices intended for use in the workplace in access, egress, work positioning and rescue systems. Various types and classes of descending devices are defined according to function and performance. These descending devices can be used in situations other than the workplace if adequate training and/or supervision are provided. ISO 22159:2007 is not intended to apply to descending devices used in leisure activities such as recreational climbing and caving, although its requirements can be useful in specifying such equipment.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 22159:2007 - Personal equipment for protection against falls - Descending devices defines requirements, test methods, marking and manufacturer information for descending devices and basic requirements for associated descent lines. It applies to automatic and manually operated descending devices intended for workplace use in access, egress, work positioning and rescue systems. The standard distinguishes multiple device types (1–6) and performance classes (A–D) and is intended for professional applications (not recreational climbing), though its requirements can inform leisure equipment specifications.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and classifications: Types 1–6 (automatic, manually controlled, with/without hands-free or panic locking) and classes A–D based on performance and intended use.
- Descent energy concept: A performance metric combining user mass, maximum descent height and number of descents to indicate device suitability for particular applications.
- Mechanical requirements: Rated loads, holding load, static strength and dynamic performance tests to verify safe operation under expected loads.
- Functional safety: Requirements for descent control elements (hands-free locking, panic locking) and behaviour under normal and abnormal operation.
- Descent line requirements: Basic specifications for lines used with devices to ensure compatibility and safety.
- Test methods and conditioning: Detailed static and dynamic test procedures, conditioning and corrosion resistance testing (normative reference: ISO 9227 salt spray) and laboratory competence per ISO/IEC 17025.
- Marking and manufacturer information: Mandatory marking, user instructions, maintenance, inspection and repair guidance; records and packaging recommendations (Annex A) and workplace use guidance (Annex B).
- Quality management: The Introduction recommends manufacturers operate a QMS (e.g., ISO 9001) and independent verification by recognized test organizations.
Applications - who uses ISO 22159:2007
- Manufacturers and designers of descending devices and descent lines - for product design, testing and CE/market conformity claims.
- Safety managers and procurement officers - to specify equipment for emergency egress, rope access, industrial descent and rescue systems.
- Rescue and confined-space teams - selecting devices appropriate to descent energy and operational needs.
- Test laboratories and certification bodies - performing static, dynamic and corrosion tests in line with the standard.
- Training providers and competent persons - to inform instruction, periodic detailed inspection and repair authorization.
