ISO 2230:2002

Overview

ISO 2230:2002 - "Rubber products - Guidelines for storage" provides practical, industry-focused guidance for the packaging, inspection, recording and storage of vulcanized and thermoplastic rubber products (solid and cellular) prior to circulation. It covers storage control to minimize degradation (hardening, softening, cracking, contamination and deformation) and defines terms such as initial storage period, extension storage period and storage life. It does not apply to raw rubber in bale, liquid or particulate form (see ISO 7664).

  • Prefer sealed individual envelopes or sealed pockets; if not possible, wrap to prevent free air access.
  • Use materials free from degrading substances (avoid copper naphthenates, creosote).
  • Avoid plasticized PVC in direct contact with rubber; opaque heat-sealable materials are recommended (e.g., polyethylene‑coated kraft paper, aluminium foil/paper/polyethylene laminate).
  • Minimum polyethylene single wrapping thickness: 0.075 mm (ISO 4591 method).
• Labelling requirements
  • Manufacturer part number, specification/polymer description, vulcanization/manufacture quarter & year, rubber classification, quantity, manufacturer ID, batch number - visible without breaking the seal.
• Storage environment
  • Temperature: keep below 25 °C; avoid direct heat sources and sunlight. If stored below 15 °C, handle carefully; warm items to ~30 °C before use.
  • Humidity: avoid condensation; relative humidity < 70% (and < 65% for polyurethanes).
  • Light & ozone: protect from UV/intense light; exclude ozone-generating equipment (mercury vapour lamps, high-voltage sources); exclude combustion gases and organic vapors.
  • Radiation: protect from ionizing radiation likely to damage products.
• Inspection, testing and records
  • Define inspection intervals, testing and recording procedures to verify storage integrity and maintain traceability. Annex A gives product-specific recommendations.
