This document specifies a test method to assess the performance of handrails using electrical resistance trace heating to provide anti-icing in low temperature environments, when installed for exterior applications. It includes requirements for the test facility, the test conditions, the test specimens, the test procedures and the test report.
Abstract
ISO 22419:2019 - Overview
ISO 22419:2019 specifies a laboratory test method for evaluating handrails using electrical resistance trace heating intended to provide anti-icing performance in low-temperature exterior marine environments. The standard covers requirements for the test facility, test conditions, specimen construction and installation, test procedures (two options), acceptance criteria and the required test report.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test purpose: Verify heated handrails can prevent ice formation and function under low-temperature operating conditions.
- Test facility: Controlled cold chamber with calibrated sensors, wind-speed control and minimal influence from refrigeration airflow.
- Test conditions:
- Ambient temperature maintained within ±2 °C (or ±3 °C down to −25 °C where chamber size limits apply).
- Ambient temperature stabilization: ±2 °C over 30 minutes; specimen stabilization: ±2 °C over 60 minutes.
- Wind-speed control maintained within 10% and measured within 10 cm of the specimen.
- Specimen requirements:
- Typical specimen length: 1 000 mm.
- Handrail installed perpendicular to wind direction; installed so as not to aid performance.
- Temperature sensing: Minimum of 9 sample points (three each on sides and top); sensors calibrated and adjusted for material emissivity when using thermal imagery.
- Test procedures:
- Option 1 (normal operation): Stabilize temperatures, energize heating media, apply wind, record temperatures and thermal images at 1-minute intervals until steady state.
- Option 2 (special events): Simulates blackout or emergency procedures; timing of energizing heating media differs to reflect agreed scenarios.
- Pass/fail criteria: Stabilized temperature at each of the 9 points must remain above 0 °C (no point below 0 °C).
- Test report: Must include laboratory ID, specimen description (materials, heating element, coating, serial number), temperature and wind data, thermal images, list of measuring devices, rated voltage and other test details.
Practical applications and users
ISO 22419 is intended for use by:
- Manufacturers of heated handrails and electro-trace heating systems
- Shipbuilders, naval architects and outfitting engineers specifying anti-icing solutions for exterior handrails on ships, ferries and offshore structures
- Testing laboratories and certification bodies conducting performance verification and issuing reports for procurement or regulatory compliance
- Class societies, purchasers and regulatory authorities evaluating conformity, safety and operational resilience in cold climates
Use cases include verification of anti-icing performance on deck handrails, gangways and exterior access fittings where slip/fall prevention and continued operation in sub-zero conditions are required.
