ISO 22488:2011 specifies the protective clothing, gloves, boots and helmet to be used by ships' crews in fighting fires on board ships. These outfits are appropriate for the fighting of small- to medium-magnitude fires, before the operation of any installed fixed fire-fighting systems, and are not intended or suitable for entry into flames.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 22488:2011 - Ships and marine technology - Shipboard fire-fighters' outfits (protective clothing, gloves, boots and helmet) defines minimum design, performance and test requirements for personal protective equipment (PPE) used by ship crews to fight small- to medium-magnitude fires on board. The standard targets non‑professional shipboard firefighters and addresses marine-specific conditions (confined spaces, limited mobility, sea motion). It is explicitly not intended for entry into flames or structural firefighting on shore.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and purpose: PPE for use prior to operation of fixed fire‑fighting systems; suitable for initial shipboard firefighting tasks.
- Protective clothing: Single garment or two‑piece suit providing coverage of torso, neck, arms and legs. Design features include secure closure systems, pockets with flaps, overlap between jacket and trousers of at least 300 mm, and coverage of the upper part of boots.
- Visibility: Clothing must include combination retroreflective/fluorescent materials with a minimum combined width of 50 mm and all‑round visibility (requirements referenced to EN 471).
- Gloves: Must conform to ISO 15383:2001 (type 2) for firefighter gloves.
- Boots: Must be of boot designs specified in Annex A, comply with ISO 20345:2004 classification I or II, and meet additional ISO 22488 performance tests.
- Helmet: Required features include neck protector, visor (colourless, distortion‑free), chin strap, adjustable internal fit, flame‑resistant/self‑extinguishing materials, electrical insulation, and accommodation for breathing apparatus.
- Design considerations: Mobility for shipboard operations, compatibility with breathing apparatus, corrosion resistance of hardware, and avoidance of heat‑conductive fittings.
- Performance & testing: The standard specifies sampling, pre‑treatment, flame/heat tests, mobility tests, visor impact and flame resistance tests, footwear assessment, and other normative annexes (A–G).
Practical applications and users
ISO 22488:2011 is used to:
- Guide procurement and specification of shipboard fire‑fighting PPE for shipowners, ship managers and ports.
- Inform PPE manufacturers and designers developing marine firefighter suits, boots, gloves and helmets.
- Support classification societies, flag administrations and maritime safety officers when assessing compliance for onboard safety equipment.
- Provide reference for crew training and onboard emergency preparedness planning.
