ISO 22538-5:2010 specifies a set of operational and emergency procedures for the safe storage, handling and transfer of liquid and gaseous oxygen.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 22538-5:2010 - Space systems - Oxygen safety - Part 5: Operational and emergency procedures specifies operational and emergency procedures for the safe storage, handling and transfer of liquid oxygen (LOX) and gaseous oxygen (GOX) in space systems and related facilities. The standard focuses on practical safety controls-standard operational procedures (SOPs), personnel qualifications, protective equipment, system examinations, cryogenic handling (cool‑down and cold‑shock) and emergency response for oxygen leaks, spills and fires.
Key topics and requirements
- Standard operational procedures (SOPs): SOPs shall be developed by qualified technical personnel, include checklists, be reviewed by safety authorities and implemented by line management. SOPs must address notification, leak detection, ignition-source control and PPE.
- Personnel, training and certification: Operators must be trained and certified for LOX/GOX work, familiar with oxygen properties, compatible materials, manufacturer manuals, PPE use, cleanliness and emergency actions.
- Confined-space controls and monitoring: Oxygen enrichment/depletion hazards require calibrated oxygen detectors and entry control; safe entry limits (ambient O2 between 19.5–25.0 vol% for free entry) and authorization procedures are specified.
- Personal protective equipment (PPE): Guidance on clothing, gloves, footwear, face/eye protection, respiratory protection and buddy‑system requirements during LOX handling.
- Cryogenic handling and cool‑down: Procedures to limit thermal shock, geysering and pressure surges; recommendation for cold‑shock with clean liquid nitrogen followed by inspection and re‑torquing.
- Examinations and inspections: Visual safety checks for corrosion, cracking, leaks, vibration, frost on vacuum lines, relief‑vent obstructions and contamination.
- Emergency procedures: Classification of emergencies (leaks, spills, fires), immediate actions to isolate oxygen sources, ventilate, disable ignition sources, and coordinate fire‑fighting and assistance plans.
Applications and who uses it
ISO 22538-5 is used by:
- Aerospace and space‑systems engineers and designers
- Ground support and launch facility operators
- Safety managers and occupational health personnel
- Cryogenic technicians and LOX/GOX handling staff
- Emergency responders and fire‑fighting teams supporting space operations
Typical applications include safe procedures for oxygen storage areas, transfer lines, test stands, launch pad operations and transportation of oxygen‑loaded systems.
