This document specifies a test method to measure the dimensional changes of a linoleum floorcovering while being adhered to a glass substrate. This method is to be used in conjunction with other test methods and not used solely to determine the suitability of a particular adhesive/linoleum combination.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 22633:2019 specifies a laboratory test method to determine the dimensional changes of a linoleum floor covering when in contact with an adhesive. The method measures shrinkage/expansion of linoleum laid onto a glass substrate to amplify effects during the early stages of bonding. It is intended for use alongside other test methods and not as the sole criterion for adhesive/linoleum suitability.
Keywords: ISO 22633:2019, linoleum testing, adhesives for floor coverings, dimensional change, test method.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope & principle: Measures dimensional change of linoleum during adhesive drying/curing to indicate early-stage movement.
- Apparatus & materials:
- Notched trowel (notch dimensions per adhesive manufacturer).
- Roller (approx. 60 ±5 mm width, 90 ±5 mm diameter, mass 3.50 ±0.05 kg).
- Glass plates (≥6 mm thick, 300×300 mm or 350×350 mm).
- Measuring device accurate to 0.01 mm over 200 mm or 250 mm.
- Linoleum test pieces (250×250 mm or 300×300 mm).
- Preparation:
- Pre-treat linoleum in an oven at 50 °C for 24 h under ~5 kg load, then cool 24 h at 23 °C/50 % RH (ISO 554).
- Condition adhesive, glass and linoleum in 23 °C/50 % RH for 10 days.
- Datum & measurements:
- Fix gauge studs ~25 mm from edges; record reference dimensions (Measurement A).
- Apply adhesive with trowel at 60°; bond and roll as specified.
- Take measurements at defined intervals: 10 min (B1), 30 min (B2), 60 min (B3), 6 h (B4), 24 h (B5), 4 d (B6), 7 d (B7).
- Evaluation:
- Calculate mean dimensional change longitudinally and transversely: (B − A).
- Express mean percentage change to two decimal places per formula in the standard and plot change vs. time.
- Reporting: Include reference to ISO 22633:2019, adhesive/linoleum identification, trowel spec, open time, measuring device, mean percentage changes, graph, observations and test date.
Applications and users
ISO 22633:2019 is useful for:
- Adhesive manufacturers validating early wet-bond behavior with linoleum.
- Linoleum producers and product R&D assessing dimensional stability.
- Independent testing laboratories performing compliance and comparative tests.
- Flooring specifiers, architects and quality assurance teams who need data on early installation movement. Note: Because the test uses glass (an impervious substrate) to maximize effects, results may differ from site conditions on porous substrates - use in conjunction with other tests and field trials.
