This document specifies general requirements and definitions of Dimethyl Ether (DME) fuel system components, intended for use on the types of motor vehicles defined in ISO 3833. It also provides general design principles and specifies requirements for instructions and marking. This document is applicable to vehicles (mono-fuel, bi-fuel or dual-fuel applications) using Dimethyl Ether in accordance with ISO 16861 and ASTM D7901. It is not applicable to the following: a) fuel containers; b) stationary gas engines; c) container mounting hardware; d) electronic fuel management; e) refuelling receptacles. NOTE 1 It is recognized that miscellaneous components not specifically covered herein can be examined to meet the criteria of this document and tested according to the appropriate functional tests. NOTE 2 All references to pressure in this document are considered gauge pressures unless otherwise specified.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 22760-1:2019 defines general requirements and definitions for Dimethyl Ether (DME) fuel system components used in road vehicles (as defined in ISO 3833). It provides design principles, construction and assembly rules, electrical and wiring requirements, and mandatory instructions and marking. The standard applies to mono-fuel, bi-fuel and dual-fuel vehicles using DME in accordance with ISO 16861 and ASTM D7901. It excludes fuel containers, stationary gas engines, container mounting hardware, electronic fuel management and refuelling receptacles.
Keywords: ISO 22760-1, Dimethyl Ether, DME fuel system, road vehicles, DME components
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and definitions: Clear terminology for valves, pumps, fittings, injectors, rail sensors, multivalves, PRV/PRD and vehicle fuel configurations (mono-, bi-, dual-fuel).
- Materials and construction: Components must use materials compatible with DME; non-metallic parts must pass oxygen-ageing and immersion tests referenced in ISO 22760-2.
- Sealing and joints: Gas-tight sealing required; replace tapered thread fittings if joints need disassembly; tank-attached threads must meet international standards.
- Temperature ranges: On-board components must meet specified temperature classes. Example ranges:
- Engine compartment: moderate −20 °C to 120 °C; cold −40 °C to 120 °C
- On-board (except engine compartment): −20 °C to 85 °C (moderate) / −40 °C to 85 °C (cold)
- Container accessories: −20 °C to 65 °C (moderate) / −40 °C to 65 °C (cold)
- Electrical and wiring: Wiring and electrical parts must comply with ISO 6722‑1/6722‑2; DME-containing components must not conduct electrical current; openings require abrasion protection.
- Valve behavior: Automatic tank valves must be normally closed and energized only when the engine is running in DME mode.
- Instructions and marking: Manufacturers must supply clear installation/maintenance instructions and permanently mark components with manufacturer ID, part number, working pressure/temperature, fuel type, electrical ratings, certification symbol, approval number and references to ISO 22760 series.
Practical applications and users
ISO 22760-1 is used by:
- OEMs and vehicle system integrators designing DME-powered vehicles
- Component manufacturers (valves, pumps, filters, lines, sensors)
- Test labs and certification bodies conducting material and functional tests
- Fleet operators and maintenance teams implementing safe installation, servicing and parts replacement
- Regulators and approval authorities assessing conformity and type approval
Benefits include improved safety, interoperability of DME components, consistent marking and documentation, and alignment with fuel specifications (ISO 16861, ASTM D7901).
