ISO 22866:2005 establishes principles for the measurement of droplet drift from all types of equipment designed for applying plant protection products. Detailed specifications relate to tractor-mounted, trailed and self-propelled agricultural sprayers operating in arable field crops (boom sprayers) and in bush and tree (including vines, hops, fruit) crops (including broadcast air-assisted sprayers). The principles it defines are also applicable for any hand-held equipment or aircraft, but detailed protocols for such systems are not included in the specifications defined. It specifies the making of field measurements so as to determine the quantities of spray drift during application at defined distances from a treated area for risk assessment purposes. Standard measurement distances are defined that are used to enable the results from different experiments to be compared.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 22866:2005 – Equipment for Crop Protection - Methods for Field Measurement of Spray Drift is an international standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). It establishes the principles and procedures for accurately measuring droplet drift from equipment used to apply plant protection products. The scope covers tractor-mounted, trailed, and self-propelled agricultural sprayers in arable field crops (boom sprayers), as well as in bush and tree crops, including vines, hops, and fruit (broadcast air-assisted sprayers). The standard is foundational for risk assessment studies, supporting environmental safety and regulatory compliance in agricultural spraying operations.
Key Topics
- Measurement Principles: Defines procedures for conducting field measurements of spray drift, focusing on both ground and airborne deposition at defined distances downwind of treated areas.
- Equipment Coverage: Applies to a range of plant protection product applicators, including boom sprayers for field crops and broadcast air-assisted sprayers for orchards and bush crops.
- Sampling Protocols: Details setup of sampling arrays, distance measurement, replication, and data capture to enable reliable and reproducible drift measurement.
- Meteorological Conditions: Specifies required weather condition monitoring such as wind speed, wind direction, temperature, and humidity during testing, ensuring valid and comparable results.
- Documentation and Reporting: Outlines mandatory recording of all relevant test conditions (equipment settings, environmental data, crop characteristics) and structured presentation of results to support comparisons between trials.
- Collector Selection and Handling: Provides guidance on selecting and using samplers and collectors for reliable drift measurement, including validation and maintenance to ensure accurate data.
Applications
ISO 22866:2005 serves as a reference tool for:
- Environmental Risk Assessment of Pesticides: Enabling standardized measurement of spray drift to assess potential contamination of surface water, field margins, non-target crops, and sensitive habitats.
- Regulatory Compliance: Supporting manufacturers, regulators, and agricultural practitioners in meeting national and international requirements for crop protection equipment testing and certification.
- Comparative Studies: Facilitating accurate comparisons between different types of spraying systems, nozzle technologies, and application techniques under controlled field conditions.
- Research and Development: Providing a framework for R&D in spray technology aimed at minimizing off-target drift and improving application efficiency.
- Training and Best Practice: Assisting agronomists, applicators, and extension services in understanding operational factors affecting spray drift, thus supporting improved spray management and reduced environmental impact.
The standard is relevant across global agricultural sectors, including arable farming, horticulture, viticulture, and specialty crops, wherever chemical crop protection is practiced.
