ISO 22878:2004 specifies the test methods and apparatus to be used to check the performance of castors and wheels.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 22878:2004 - Castors and wheels - Test methods and apparatus defines standardized test methods and the required apparatus used to check the performance of castors and wheels. It establishes a test sequence, measurement practice and reporting requirements so that results are repeatable and comparable across manufacturers, test houses and users. The standard was prepared by ISO/TC 110 (Industrial trucks), SC 3 (Castors and wheels).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and test sequence: Tests are carried out in a predefined sequence on the same sample(s) unless otherwise specified. Test loads must be applied with the centre of gravity aligned to the mounting plane.
- Test reporting: Test reports must identify the relevant standard, test machine type, deviations, sample details, test location and date, plus actual readings and pass/fail indications.
- Measurement and vocabulary: Terms and symbols follow ISO 22877 (vocabulary and symbols).
- Specific test methods (selected highlights from the standard):
- Wheel play and swivel play tests - initial and final play measurements to quantify wear (measured in millimetres).
- Electrical resistance test - measures resistance between mounting plane and metal plate using an insulation tester (nominal open-circuit 500 V d.c.), with multiple readings across the tread.
- Braking and locking tests - fatigue cycling of braking/locking devices (excluding threaded mechanisms), plus efficiency checks for wheel and swivel brakes under specified traction forces.
- Dynamic test - verifies load capacity under dynamic running conditions; includes obstacle impact testing (e.g., obstacles placed at a defined angle and spacing, rectangular obstacles ~100 mm wide with rounded edges).
- Additional methods listed include static test, contact pressure test, chair castor brake performance, impact test, long-distance running, rolling resistance, swivel resistance and stem retention.
- Apparatus examples: Illustrative test machines include linear or circular tracks and drums with smooth steel surfaces; low-friction rigs and force measurement devices are specified for brake checks.
Applications and users
- Who uses ISO 22878:2004
- Castor and wheel manufacturers - to validate product performance
- Test laboratories and certification bodies - to carry out standardized tests and issue test reports
- OEMs and specifiers (furniture, hospital equipment, industrial trucks) - to select suitable castors and wheels
- Procurement and quality teams - for supplier verification and acceptance testing
- Practical benefits
- Ensures consistent, repeatable performance evaluation
- Facilitates comparison between products and compliance with downstream application standards
- Supports product development, durability assessment and safety verification
