This document specifies a method for determining the angle of recovery of fabrics from creasing. The results obtained by this method for textile fabrics of very different kinds cannot be compared directly.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 2313-1:2021 is an international standard specifying a precise method for determining the recovery of textile fabrics from creasing. This method focuses on measuring the angle of recovery of a horizontally folded fabric specimen. Understanding crease recovery is crucial for assessing fabric performance, durability, and appearance-key factors for textile manufacturers, apparel producers, and quality control laboratories.
This standard replaces the previous ISO 2313:1972 version and includes technical revisions that improve testing accuracy and clarify procedures. Important changes include refined specimen preparation, updated loading tolerances, and the addition of rapid and delay crease recovery angle measurements.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Purpose
The standard defines a method to quantify the crease recovery angle of fabrics after being folded under standardized conditions. It highlights that results across different fabric types may not be directly comparable since fabric composition, thickness, and texture affect recovery behavior. -
Test Methodology
The specimen, cut to specific dimensions, is folded horizontally and subjected to a controlled load using a press apparatus. The load is precisely 10.0 N ± 0.5 N, applied to an area of 15 mm × 15 mm for 5 minutes. After removing the load, the fabric is allowed to recover, and the crease recovery angle is measured using an instrument with a circular scale. -
Measurement of Angle of Recovery
Two key measurements are defined:- Rapid crease recovery angle, taken precisely 15 seconds after load removal.
- Delay crease recovery angle, taken 5 minutes after load removal.
These readings indicate fabric resilience to creasing over short and longer durations, reflecting practical wear behavior.
-
Specimen Preparation and Conditioning
Specimens must be cut in representative manners, avoiding distorted areas and maintaining minimum distances from fabric edges. Prior treatment procedures such as washing or pressing are accounted for, including standardized conditioning according to ISO 139 atmospheres. -
Reporting and Expression of Results
Mean crease recovery values are calculated for warp (length) and weft (transverse) directions separately. Test reports include all parameters such as folded surface orientation, specimen numbering, and environmental conditions to ensure reproducibility and transparency.
Applications
ISO 2313-1:2021 serves as a fundamental reference for industries and laboratories involved in:
-
Textile Quality Control
Monitoring fabric performance post-manufacture or pre-shipment ensures compliance with quality specifications related to wrinkle resistance. -
Apparel and Home Textile Manufacturing
Evaluating crease recovery informs fabric selection for clothing, upholstery, and linens where appearance retention is critical. -
R&D and Textile Development
Innovators develop new fiber blends or finishing treatments aimed at enhancing crease resistance, leveraging this standardized test to validate improvements. -
Supplier and Buyer Agreements
Textile purchasers rely on crease recovery data verified by this ISO method to make informed procurement decisions and enforce standards across the supply chain.
