Establishes a simplified system for the transliteration. This simplification of the stringent rules established by ISO 233:1984 is especially intended to facilitate the processing of bibliographic information (e.g. catalogues, indices, citations, etc.). Annex A gives the diacritical signs used (taken from the code table of ISO 5436:1983).
Abstract
Overview
ISO 233-2:1993 is an international standard published by ISO that establishes a simplified transliteration system for converting Arabic characters into Latin characters. This standard is part two in the ISO 233 series, which addresses transliteration rules specifically for the Arabic language. The simplified approach outlined in ISO 233-2 facilitates easier processing of bibliographic information, such as catalogues, indices, and citations, while maintaining unambiguous, reversible character conversion.
The standard is designed to simplify the stringent transliteration rules established in ISO 233:1984 (Part 1) and is especially useful for applications that require efficient data handling and retrieval without sacrificing the ability to reconstruct the original Arabic text.
Key Topics
-
Simplified Transliteration System
ISO 233-2 provides a practical system where each Arabic character is generally transliterated into a single Latin character, minimizing the use of digraphs or diacritical marks. This simplification supports automated processing and bibliographic management. -
Unambiguous Reversibility
The transliteration system ensures that each Latin character corresponds uniquely to a source Arabic character, enabling accurate reconstitution of the original text. -
Alphabetical and Punctuation Conversion
The standard covers all Arabic letters, including hamza, vowels, diphthongs, and punctuation marks, defining consistent transliteration forms in Latin script. -
Use of Diacritical Signs
Supplementary diacritical marks are incorporated from ISO 5426:1983 to represent specific Arabic phonemes and orthographic features accurately. -
Exclusion of Phonetics and Aesthetic Variations
The system prioritizes precise graphical representation over phonetic transcription or national linguistic customs, enhancing its universality for bibliographic and documentation purposes. -
Capitalization Rules
Capitalization in transliterated text follows national conventions, typically capitalizing the first letter of personal names, titles, or the initial word in a bibliographic entry despite Arabic script lacking case distinction.
Applications
ISO 233-2:1993 is particularly valuable in:
-
Library Cataloguing and Indexing
Facilitates standardized entry of Arabic titles and author names in Latin-script databases, enabling better searchability, sorting, and data exchange. -
Bibliographic References and Citations
Enables consistent citation formats in academic, scientific, and cultural publications involving Arabic-language content. -
Information Retrieval Systems
Assists in converting Arabic texts into machine-readable Latin characters, promoting interoperability across digital platforms and multilingual systems. -
Archiving and Documentation
Supports preservation and organized referencing of Arabic materials where original script may not be accessible to all users. -
International Standard Communication
Provides a globally accepted method for representing Arabic script in Latin characters, crucial for cross-border information exchange.
