This document describes the general safety requirements and guidance for the electrical high-power interface (HPI) in the ISO 23316 series. The following topics are not within the scope of this document: — service, maintenance, and related diagnostics; — functional safety; — control strategies for high power supply systems (PS) and load consumption systems; — application-specific strategies and operational modes; — component design; — energy storage systems, e. g. supercapacitors or batteries; — multiple electrical power supplies to a common DC-link.

ISO 23316-3:2023 - Tractors and machinery for agriculture and forestry - Electrical high‑power interface 700 V DC / 480 V AC - Part 3: Safety requirements defines general safety requirements and guidance for the high‑power interface (HPI) used on agricultural and forestry machinery. It sets safety expectations for systems operating at nominal 700 V DC / 480 V AC (VC‑B2 class) and is intended to be used together with other parts of the ISO 23316 series (physical layer, AC/DC modes, control‑communication, etc.).
This part specifically excludes service/maintenance, functional safety, control strategies, component design, energy storage, and multiple supplies to a common DC link.

- The HPI control (HPI‑C) and master control (HPI‑MC) shall coordinate voltage on VC‑B2 conductors per ISO 16230‑1, including permitting controlled reverse power flow (e.g., regenerative braking) when safe.
- Automatic shutdown: voltage must reduce to below VC‑B within 1 s after interlock break or cable severance unless justified by risk assessment.
- Protection and bonding
- Protection of persons against electric shock must follow ISO 16230‑1 Clause 5 (double/reinforced insulation, barriers, enclosures).
- Exposed conductive parts used in the bonding path must be galvanically connected to the protective bonding conductor (PBC).
- For mated machinery, bonding resistance requirements account for a 2.5 m separation; the allowed total resistance can be split so each side is ≤ 0.05 Ω (half of 0.1 Ω).
- Insulation monitoring
- Insulation monitoring coordination references ISO/FDIS 23316‑6 where used (continuous monitoring is not mandated by ISO 16230‑1).
