This document specifies general requirements and test methods for portable dental equipment for use in non-permanent healthcare environments. This document applies to portable dental units, portable patient chairs, portable operator’s stools, portable operating lights, portable suction source equipment, portable air compressors and other portable dental equipment in instances where these devices are designed and constructed to be transported for use in non-permanent healthcare environments. NOTE Particular requirements for specific types of portable dental equipment for use in non-permanent healthcare environments are specified in subsequent parts of this document. This document does not apply to stationary dental equipment, wearable equipment (e.g. headlamps and loupes), mobile dental equipment or portable dental equipment that is not intended to be used in non-permanent healthcare environments or not designed to be disassembled, folded or packed for human transport between non-permanent healthcare environments. Requirements for stationary dental equipment that can be installed in a dental mobile medical facility (e.g. vehicular or containerized mobile dental clinic) are not considered in this document.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 23402-1:2026 sets out the general requirements and test methods for portable dental equipment intended for use in non-permanent healthcare environments. This international standard, developed by ISO, addresses the unique challenges associated with providing dental care outside of traditional clinical settings. It ensures that portable dental units, patient chairs, operator's stools, operating lights, suction source equipment, air compressors, and other portable dental apparatus are reliably designed for transportation, assembly, and safe operation in temporary environments, such as field clinics, outreach programs, and emergency response situations.
Key Topics
- Scope: Applies specifically to dental equipment designed for transport and human carriage, excluding stationary, wearable, or mobile equipment not intended for non-permanent environments.
- Classification: Outlines criteria for equipment based on electrical operation, intended use environment (indoor/outdoor), supply sources (external or self-contained), and exposure conditions during transport.
- Transport Requirements:
- Grips and handles suitable for carrying.
- Module mass limits for safe manual handling.
- Dimension limits for passing through standard doors.
- Resistance to environmental stressors (impact, drop, vibration).
- Protection against ingress of liquids and foreign objects during transport, with requirements based on exposure classification (e.g., IP21 for limited exposure, IP55 for rugged outdoor use).
- Operational Requirements:
- Clear usability guidelines based on IEC standards.
- Surface materials and design ensuring effective cleaning and disinfection.
- Safe operation across a range of environmental conditions.
- Documentation and Marking:
- Clear, durable instructions for use, assembly/disassembly, and technical details.
- Consistent marking of equipment and packaging for identification and use guidance.
Applications
The requirements of ISO 23402-1:2026 are crucial for:
- Military Dental Units: Providing dental care in field or deployed settings.
- Humanitarian and Disaster Response: Ensuring portable dental systems can be safely used and maintained in areas affected by disasters or lacking permanent healthcare facilities.
- Public Health Outreach Clinics: Supporting programs in schools, workplaces, correctional facilities, or residential care by enabling safe, clean, and effective mobile dental care.
- Dental Education and Research: Equipping academic programs conducting external clinics or research projects in temporary locations.
- Remote and Rural Healthcare: Facilitating delivery of dental services to communities with limited access to permanent dental clinics.
The standard promotes high-quality dental care delivery in non-permanent healthcare environments, prioritizing safety, usability, infection control, and equipment durability during transport and varied environmental exposures.
Related Standards
ISO 23402-1:2026 references several international standards for its requirements and test methodologies:
