This document provides requirements and recommendations for the design of field studies with soil invertebrates (e.g. for the monitoring of the quality of a soil as a habitat for organisms). It applies to all terrestrial biotopes inhabited by soil invertebrates, although this information can vary according to the national requirements or the climatic and regional conditions of the site to be sampled. NOTE While this document aims to be applicable globally, the existing information refers mostly to temperate regions. However, the (few) studies from other (tropical and boreal) regions, as well as theoretical considerations, allow the conclusion that the principles laid down in this document are generally valid.[1]],[[11]],[[12]],[[13]
Abstract
Overview
ISO 23611-6:2026 - Soil Quality - Sampling of Soil Invertebrates - Part 6: Design of Sampling Programmes with Soil Invertebrates - provides essential guidance for designing and implementing effective field studies that assess the quality of soil as a habitat for invertebrate organisms. This international standard offers requirements and best practices for planning and conducting soil invertebrate sampling programs, contributing to accurate soil quality monitoring, ecological assessment, and environmental protection.
This standard applies to all terrestrial environments inhabited by soil invertebrates, with principles intended for global applicability. While much of the supporting research relates to temperate regions, the guidance provided is relevant for a wide range of climatic and regional contexts, supporting both regulatory compliance and scientific research in soil assessment.
Key Topics
- Design of Field Studies: Recommendations for defining study objectives, study area characterization, sampling patterns, and the choice of methods based on the target soil invertebrate groups.
- Sampling Patterns and Strategies: Guidance on grid, random, clustered, and transect-based sampling, as well as the use of stratified sampling to account for site heterogeneity.
- Study Objectives: Objectives such as site assessment of contaminated land, analysis of anthropogenic impacts, biological soil classification, and long-term monitoring.
- Quality Assurance: Emphasis on rigorous sampling protocols, sample integrity, consistent documentation, and robust statistical methods to ensure data quality and comparability over time.
- Safety and Compliance: Consideration for site safety, legal aspects (e.g., site access), and regulatory alignment with national requirements.
- Integration with Other Parameters: Recommendations for coordination when sampling coincides with other soil or ecological studies.
Applications
ISO 23611-6:2026 is an invaluable tool for professionals and stakeholders involved in:
- Environmental Monitoring: Regular assessment of soil quality to detect and understand changes in invertebrate communities and ecosystem health.
- Contaminated Land Assessment: Establishing soil biological baselines and evaluating the impact of pollutants, chemicals, or hazardous substances on soil fauna.
- Impact of Human Activities: Studying the effects of agriculture, infrastructure development, or industrial processes on soil biological diversity and function.
- Soil Restoration and Conservation: Monitoring soil recovery and the success of nature protection or restoration projects, including the tracking of long-term ecological trends.
- Scientific Research: Supporting ecological and biodiversity studies by ensuring standardized, repeatable, and scientifically robust sampling frameworks for soil invertebrate communities.
- Legal and Regulatory Compliance: Providing defensible data and procedural assurance required for environmental impact assessments, risk analysis, or legal reporting.
Related Standards
Implementing ISO 23611-6:2026 is often most effective when combined with other soil and ecological standards, including:
- ISO 23611 Series: Other parts detail specific sampling and extraction methods for distinct soil organism groups.
- ISO 18400 Series: Covers general soil sampling principles (e.g., ISO 18400-101, ISO 18400-104) and quality assurance (e.g., ISO 18400-104, ISO 18400-202, ISO 18400-203).
- Ecotoxicological Assessment: ISO 15799 and ISO 17616 offer further guidance for ecotoxicological evaluation and biological reference value establishment.
- Soil Analysis Methods: Standards such as ISO 10390 (pH measurement), ISO 11277 (particle size), and ISO 10694 (soil organic carbon) support comprehensive soil characterization.
Practical Value
Utilizing ISO 23611-6:2026 ensures scientifically consistent and comparable data for the assessment of soil invertebrates, forming a basis for:
- Reliable soil quality indicators and baseline data
- Enhanced environmental risk management
- Sound decision-making for land management, restoration, and protection efforts
- Fulfillment of national and international regulatory mandates
- Support of biodiversity and ecological research worldwide
Adopting this standard strengthens the validity and usefulness of soil invertebrate monitoring programs, contributing to better soil quality management and sustainable ecosystem stewardship.
