This document specifies safety requirements and test methods for mattresses, including mattress bases and mattress toppers, used in children's cots, cribs and suspended baby beds, for domestic and non-domestic use. This document does not apply to mattresses for carry cots and pram bodies, inflatable mattresses, water mattresses and mattresses used for medical purposes.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 23767:2021 - "Children’s furniture - Mattresses for cots and cribs - Safety requirements and test methods" is an international standard that specifies safety requirements and test methods for mattresses, mattress bases and mattress toppers intended for cots, cribs and suspended baby beds in both domestic and non‑domestic settings. The standard is focused on reducing hazards related to entrapment, suffocation, choking, chemical exposure and fire, while establishing repeatable test methods and acceptance criteria for manufacturers, test laboratories and regulators. Note: it excludes mattresses for carry cots, pram bodies, inflatable or water mattresses and mattresses for medical use.
Key Topics and Technical Requirements
- Scope and definitions: clear definitions for mattress toppers, mattress bases and fabric types (woven, nonwoven, knitted).
- General test conditions: sample preparation, ambient storage (recommendation prior to testing), and environmental limits (tests normally at 15–25 °C; record deviations).
- Application of forces and tolerances: static loads typically maintained for (10 ± 2) s, durability loads for (2 ± 1) s; conversion 10 N = 1 kg; tolerances for forces (±5 %), masses (±0.5 %), dimensions (±1 mm) and loading pad positioning (±5 mm).
- Test equipment specifications: detailed geometries and masses for measuring table, loading pad (200 mm diameter with spherical face), spherical load (115 mm diameter, 2.5 kg), test template, test foam (100 mm thick PU with specified density and hardness) and probes/cones/feeler gauges used to assess entrapment and firmness.
- Chemical hazards: migration limits for heavy metals on the sleeping surface in accordance with EN 71‑3:2019 (Category III) and recommended colourfastness tests.
- Fire and thermal hazards: textile/plastic coverings tested per ISO 8124‑2 and EN 597‑1 - no surface flash, rate of flame spread ≤ 50 mm/s and no progressive smouldering.
- Mechanical hazards: tests and criteria addressing entrapment gaps, body entrapment, entanglement, external suffocation (labels, packaging, firmness), choking (small parts, access to filling), edges/protrusions and structural integrity (shrinkage and deformation).
- Product information: marking, purchase information and instructions for safe use.
Applications - Who Uses ISO 23767
- Mattress and toddler bed manufacturers for design and compliance
- Independent testing laboratories and certification bodies
- Product safety engineers and quality assurance teams
- Regulators and standards authorities assessing market compliance
- Childcare facilities and procurement managers evaluating product safety
- Importers/exporters ensuring conformity to international safety requirements
Related Standards (if applicable)
ISO 23767 references and aligns with several standards, including:
- ISO 2439 (foam hardness)
- ISO 8124‑1 / ISO 8124‑2 (toy safety - mechanical and flammability)
- EN 71‑3 (migration of certain elements)
- ISO 13936‑2 (seam slippage)
- EN 597‑1 (mattress ignitability)
- EN 1334, EN 1730 (measurement and test methods for furniture)
Using ISO 23767 helps ensure infant mattress safety by combining practical test methods, clear tolerances and harmonized requirements for chemical, fire and mechanical hazards. Keywords: ISO 23767, children’s furniture, mattresses for cots and cribs, safety requirements, test methods, infant mattress safety.
