ISO 23935:2006 specifies the requirements for tests which may be applied to all fluid system components located in zones designated as "fire zones" and built to satisfy the minimum level specified for withstanding fire. It does not relate to withstanding fire outside designated fire zones, nor to flammability requirements, or to those conditions induced by the flame coming from the combustion chamber.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 23935:2006 is an international standard issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that defines environmental test procedures for airborne fluid system components in aircraft. The focus is on evaluating the resistance to fire of components located within designated fire zones-specific aircraft regions such as compartments containing main engines and auxiliary power units. This standard establishes test methods for assessing components’ ability to withstand fire exposure, ensuring safety and reliability in critical zones prone to fire hazards.
The standard applies exclusively to components in designated fire zones and does not cover fire resistance outside these zones, flammability requirements, or conditions related to flames emanating from the combustion chamber.
Key Topics
- Designated Fire Zones: Areas within an aircraft identified by designers and regulatory authorities as requiring enhanced fire protection measures.
- Fire Resistance Grades:
- Fire Resistant: Components must endure a standard flame for 5 minutes without failure.
- Fireproof: Components must withstand a 15-minute flame exposure to qualify.
- Test Equipment and Conditions:
- Use of test rigs complying with ISO 2685:1998 to simulate real fluid circuit operation under fire exposure.
- Components tested under controlled fluid temperature, pressure, and flow rate matching normal or maximum operating conditions.
- Vibration applied during testing to replicate actual aircraft operating environments.
- Test Fluids:
- Fuel or high-temperature resisting oil, air, or nitrogen as applicable per component requirements.
- Test Procedure:
- Specimens, such as hoses, must meet specific mounting and exposure details, including flame positioning and length.
- Test flame exposure duration depends on component fire resistance classification.
- No leakage or failure during testing is an acceptance criterion.
- Safety Precautions: Special measures must be taken to protect personnel from fire risk, smoke inhalation, and toxic combustion products during testing.
Applications
ISO 23935:2006 is crucial for manufacturers, engineers, and safety regulators involved with the design, testing, and certification of aircraft fluid system components such as hoses, pipes, connectors, and valves that operate within fire zones of an aircraft. It is widely used to:
- Validate the fire resistance of fuel and hydraulic system components in aerospace.
- Ensure compliance with aviation safety regulations regarding fire risk mitigation.
- Support procurement specifications and quality assurance processes for aerospace suppliers.
- Aid design decisions for materials and components requiring fire protection.
- Enhance overall aircraft fire safety by defining standardized test methods that predict component performance under fire exposure.
Implementing ISO 23935:2006 helps airlines and manufacturers reduce fire-related hazards, improve safety margins, and comply with international aviation standards.
Related Standards
- ISO 2685:1998 – Aircraft environmental test procedure for airborne equipment-Resistance to fire in designated fire zones. ISO 23935 references this standard extensively for test rig design and flame burner requirements.
- Other aerospace fluid system and material flammability standards may complement ISO 23935 to address comprehensive fire safety assessments beyond designated fire zones or for ignition sources like combustion chambers.
- Standards for vibration testing and material testing in aerospace environments can also support compliance with ISO 23935 test conditions.
