This document specifies a method for the classification of requirements based on severity and susceptibility. The classification method requires a system in line with the framework described in ISO 24096-1 to form a complete system. This document: — gives guidance on the needed elements for a consistent evaluation of the severity over time, and supports a company business model and its brand image; — gives background to why additional parameters alongside severity are useful as a base for classification; — adds susceptibility as a viable parameter along with severity; — gives guidance on the methodology for classification requirements using severity and susceptibility.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 24096-2:2024 - Technical product documentation (TPD) - Part 2 describes a method to classify requirements in product documentation by combining severity and susceptibility. Designed to complement the framework in ISO 24096-1, this standard provides guidance for consistent, organisation-specific classification systems that communicate the consequences of requirement nonconformity in the FUN‑SPEC and other TPD. It is a 2024 first‑edition ISO standard intended primarily for industry (e.g., automotive, aerospace) but applicable across engineering disciplines.
Key topics
- Three‑step classification method
- Step 1: Evaluate severity - identify functions, effects of function deviation, and map effects to a severity rating using a severity list.
- Step 2: Evaluate susceptibility - identify which requirements most affect a function and how quickly function deteriorates when requirements deviate.
- Step 3: Weigh severity and susceptibility together to determine the final classification (examples shown as diagram templates in the standard).
- Severity lists - normative, organisation‑defined tables that standardise how different effects map to severity ratings to reduce arbitrary assessment.
- Function‑driven assessment - use the function of the design solution as the route to determine severity and the impact of deviating functions.
- Requirement pyramid and susceptibility guidance - how different requirement types relate to susceptibility and practical evaluation steps.
- Annexes - Annex A provides classification examples; Annex B offers additional guidance on susceptibility.
- Mandatory parameters - severity and susceptibility are required parameters for classification; the standard clarifies how to combine them without overloading TPD with classification indications.
Applications
- Use ISO 24096-2 to:
- Prioritise inspection and quality assurance resources (purchasing, production control, revision) by communicating consequence levels of nonconformity.
- Support product safety, quality and brand objectives via consistent, auditable classification practice.
- Integrate classification results into functional specifications (FUN‑SPEC) and technical drawings to inform downstream stakeholders.
- Typical users:
- Technical writers, product engineers, quality managers, suppliers and procurement teams in automotive, aerospace and other engineered‑product sectors.
- Organisations creating or harmonising an internal classification system for TPD.
