This document specifies requirements for GNSS positioning augmentation centres that distribute correction data to provide higher accuracy and integrity information for positioning users in the civil and commercial market. The GNSS positioning augmentation centres cover the following types of positioning: a) real-time sub-meter to decimetre-level positioning; b) real-time centimetre-level positioning; c) post-processed geodetic positioning. This document also specifies roles of the following stakeholders and functions of the software present at GNSS positioning augmentation centres: — role of planner; — role of designer; — role of administrator; — function of software.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 24246:2022 - Space systems: Requirements for global navigation satellite system (GNSS) positioning augmentation centres - defines requirements for facilities that generate and distribute correction data and integrity information to improve GNSS positioning for civil and commercial users. The standard covers three service types: real-time sub‑metre to decimetre‑level, real‑time centimetre‑level, and post‑processed geodetic positioning. It addresses system scope, stakeholder roles and essential software functions for GNSS positioning augmentation centres.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Service types and performance: Requirements for standard augmentation, precise augmentation and geodetic services to deliver higher accuracy and integrity.
- Correction data: Specification of communicable correction factors, receiver‑dedicated corrections and other correction elements used to mitigate satellite and atmospheric errors.
- Integrity information: Obligations for providing integrity metrics suitable for safety‑sensitive and commercial positioning applications.
- Verification and calibration: Procedures to distinguish accuracy vs. precision, verification principles for horizontal and vertical positioning, calibration, evaluation periods and convergence time requirements.
- Maintenance and monitoring: Continuous performance monitoring, quality control items and maintenance practices to sustain service levels.
- Cybersecurity and user service: Requirements for protecting augmentation centre systems and delivering reliable user support.
- Stakeholder roles: Defined responsibilities for the planner, designer, administrator and the software functions operating in the augmentation centre.
- System context and annex guidance: System overview, universe of discourse, and informative annexes on cross‑border data exchange, GNSS constellations, data transmission, positional references, meaconing and quality evaluation approaches.
Practical applications
ISO 24246:2022 is intended to enable deployment and operation of GNSS positioning augmentation centres that supply high‑performance GNSS services used in:
- Autonomous and connected vehicles (automotive, maritime, UAV)
- Precision agriculture and construction
- Surveying, cadastral and geodetic networks (CORS)
- Aviation and safety‑critical navigation applications
- Location‑based commercial services requiring centimetre‑class accuracy
By standardizing correction distribution, integrity reporting and operational roles, ISO 24246 helps organizations deliver consistent, interoperable augmentation services and supports safe integration of GNSS into automated systems.
Who should use this standard
- GNSS service operators and national agencies
- CORS network planners and administrators
- System and software designers for augmentation centres
- Geodesists, surveyors and infrastructure integrators
- OEMs for autonomous systems and precision navigation providers
