This part of ISO 2426 specifies the nature and limits of characteristics inherent in wood and manufacturing defects enabling the visual assessment of the plywood for allocation to an appearance class. This part of ISO 2426 applies to plywood, the surface veneers of which are made from softwood species. It does not apply to overlaid panels.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 2426-3:2000, "Plywood - Classification by surface appearance - Part 3: Softwood", specifies how to visually assess and classify softwood plywood by surface appearance. The standard defines the nature and limits of characteristics inherent in wood and manufacturing defects so panels can be allocated to one of the appearance classes (E, I, II, III, IV). It applies only to plywood whose surface veneers are made from softwood species and does not cover overlaid panels.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Appearance classes: Panels are visually graded into classes E, I, II, III or IV based on permissible surface characteristics and defects.
- Characteristics inherent in wood: The standard lists allowed features such as pin knots, sound and unsound knots, splits, resin pockets/streaks, discoloration, insect marks and irregular wood structure - and defines limits beyond which a panel fails a class.
- Manufacturing defects: Specifies acceptable limits for open joints, overlaps, blisters, hollows/imprints, surface roughness, sanding-through (area limits), glue penetration (area limits), foreign particles and repairs (patches, shims, fillers).
- Quantified limits: ISO 2426-3 contains numeric tolerances for many items (e.g., maximum widths for open joints, maximum percentage of surface for sanding-through and glue penetration, allowable edge defects). These numeric rules enable objective visual grading and acceptance criteria.
- Serviceability note: Characteristics and defects are permitted provided they do not impair the serviceability of the panel.
Applications and who uses it
ISO 2426-3 is used wherever the visual quality of softwood plywood matters:
- Plywood manufacturers and production lines - for sorting, quality control and labeling.
- Quality inspectors and certification bodies - for conformity assessment and acceptance testing.
- Specifiers, architects and furniture manufacturers - to write procurement specifications and select appropriate appearance classes for visible surfaces (furniture, joinery, interior paneling, decorative applications).
- Timber traders and procurement teams - to establish contract terms and inspections for delivered plywood.
- Contractors and joiners - to confirm that supplied panels meet visual requirements for exposed installations.
Using ISO 2426-3 helps ensure consistent visual grading, reduces disputes over acceptance, and supports clear product specifications.
