This document specifies the design, materials, quality of manufacture, test and designation of electrical trace heating for small steel hatches onboard vessels sailing in low temperature environments (below −10 °C).
Abstract
Overview
ISO 24319:2022 - Ships and marine technology - Design and test requirements for small steel hatches using electrical trace heating - specifies design, materials, quality of manufacture, testing and designation of electrical trace heating for small steel hatches installed on vessels operating in low‑temperature environments (below −10 °C). The standard addresses anti‑icing performance and weather‑tightness for hatch covers, coamings and associated hardware where trace‑heating prevents freezing and enables hatch operation.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and purpose
- Applies to small steel hatches fitted with electrical trace heating (trace heater cable, heated pads, or panels) for ships sailing in waters with mean daily lows below −10 °C (e.g., Arctic, Baltic regions).
- Types and locking arrangements
- Three hatch types defined by locking mode:
- Type A: butterfly nut (wing nut) open
- Type B: wedge‑handle open
- Type C: hand‑wheel linkage open
- Three hatch types defined by locking mode:
- Sealing and dimensions
- Sealing rubber stripe section: 45 mm × 20 mm; allowable initial compression 2 mm, compression under closing < 4 mm.
- Seals to be glued and mechanically retained; load‑bearing plate required near each closing device.
- Materials
- Hatch covers, coamings and fittings: weldable shipbuilding steel with minimum tensile strength 235 N/mm²; low‑temperature properties must match or exceed local hull material.
- Bolts and pins: corrosion‑resistant materials, min tensile strength 235 N/mm².
- Sealing rubbers, insulating materials and lubricants must be suitable for repeated low‑temperature cycles.
- Trace heater cable construction
- Core conductor + thermal resistor, insulating layers, metal shielding braid, and outer sheath.
- Insulation and sheath options: HDPE, FEP, PFA or other proven materials.
- Cable may be self‑regulating to adapt output to ambient temperature.
- Quality of manufacture
- Smooth, defect‑free welds; no burrs or sharp edges; rounded corners radius 3 mm.
- Surface preparation to rust grades Sa2.5 or St3 (ISO 8501‑1) with appropriate anti‑rust primer; movable parts greased with neutral lubricant.
- Testing
- Weather‑tightness (including flushing tests) and anti‑icing tests (device, conditions, procedures and pass/fail criteria are specified).
- Designation and annexes
- Annex A: nominal dimensions, closing devices, hinge positions. Annex B: trace heater cable selection and layout guidance.
Practical applications and users
- Who uses it:
- Shipbuilders, naval architects and marine engineers specifying or manufacturing hatches for cold‑region operations.
- Class societies, shipyards and marine equipment suppliers designing, installing or certifying heated hatches.
- Maintenance teams and OEMs selecting trace‑heating components and installation methods.
- Practical benefits:
- Ensures reliable hatch operation in icing conditions, compliance with class requirements, improved safety and reduced operational downtime in polar and cold‑climate waters.
