This document provides methods and specifies general requirements for spacecraft level thermal balance tests (TBT) and thermal vacuum tests (TVT). It also provides basic requirements for test facilities, test procedures, test malfunction interruption emergency handling and test documentation. The methods and requirements can be used as a reference for subsystem-level and unit-level test article.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 24412:2023 - Space systems - Thermal vacuum environmental testing provides standardized methods and general requirements for spacecraft-level thermal balance tests (TBT) and thermal vacuum tests (TVT). It defines expectations for test facilities, test procedures, monitoring, interruption handling and test documentation. The standard is intended as a practical reference for spacecraft-level testing and can be applied, as appropriate, to subsystem- and unit-level test articles.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Thermal balance test (TBT): Methods to verify the adequacy of thermal models and thermal design at spacecraft level; guidance on test description, conditions and monitoring.
- Thermal vacuum test (TVT): Procedures for qualification, proto‑flight and acceptance TVTs, including general purpose and staged test types.
- Test facility requirements: Basic requirements for chamber systems, vacuum systems, thermal control (IR heaters, shrouds, solar simulators), contamination control, MGSE and data acquisition.
- Test conditions and tolerances: Statements on test tolerance, configuration control and measurement accuracy to ensure repeatable, traceable results.
- Monitoring and instrumentation: Placement and use of temperature and heat‑flux sensors for both test articles and test equipment; data acquisition system requirements.
- Test procedures and flow: Pre‑test preparations, implementation steps, post‑test actions and acceptance criteria.
- Interruption and emergency handling: Guidance for handling test facility or test‑article malfunctions, interruption protocols and recovery planning.
- Documentation: Required test reports and record keeping to support qualification, verification and regulatory review.
- Informative annexes: Examples such as solar simulator characteristics and IR heater design flow for absorbed‑flux simulation.
Practical applications and who uses it
ISO 24412:2023 is used by:
- Test project designers and test organizations implementing TBT and TVT for satellites, launch vehicles and space payloads.
- Spacecraft designers and systems engineers who need validated thermal models and verification plans.
- Test facility owners and manufacturers defining chamber capabilities, contamination control and data acquisition systems.
- Program managers and quality/acceptance teams establishing qualification and acceptance criteria (qualification, proto‑flight, acceptance TVT).
Typical applications include spacecraft thermal verification campaigns, environmental qualification, acceptance testing before launch, and as a reference when scaling down procedures to subsystem or unit testing.
