This document specifies a method for evaluating the function of reducing mosquito contact and blood feeding through the anti-mosquito fabric regardless of whether chemicals are treated or not. It provides the test method for evaluating this function without using human or animal as blood feeding sources. In addition, this document is only concerned with evaluation of anti-mosquito performance, and not concerned with evaluation of preventive method of diseases caused by anti-mosquito performance.

Overview
ISO 24461:2022 specifies a laboratory test method to assess the anti-mosquito performance of textiles using an attractive blood feeding apparatus. The method evaluates a fabric’s ability to reduce mosquito contact and blood feeding whether or not the fabric is chemically treated. Tests are performed without human or animal blood-feeding sources and focus strictly on anti-mosquito performance (not disease prevention claims). Note: some elements of the method may be subject to patent rights.

Test principle
- Use of an attractive blood feeding device to simulate mosquito attraction and feeding through the specimen.

- Feeding device with feed reservoir and thermostat temperature regulator.

- Thermostat control to ±0.5 °C.
- Test cage: cuboid approx. 380 mm × 200 mm × 200 mm with mesh on five faces and three openings (diameter 55 mm ± 2 mm) connected to feed reservoirs.
- Specimen holder and lid for quick removal and containment.
- Frame to fix feeding surface at 45° from horizontal.
- Carbon dioxide supply unit, ventilation fan and infrared surface thermometer (listed in the standard).
- Test blood, test mosquitoes (blood-unfed females), and validation samples are specified.
- Feeding device with feed reservoir and thermostat temperature regulator.
