This document specifies requirements for the field of vision from the defined working positions on the bridge of large yachts. It is applicable to large yachts with a length of 24 m or over. NOTE This document supports the aims of SOLAS, Chapter V, Regulation 22.
Abstract
Overview - ISO 24482:2023 (Large yachts - Navigational bridge visibility)
ISO 24482:2023 sets international guidance for the field of vision from defined working positions on the navigational bridge of large yachts (applicable to yachts 24 m and over). The standard supports the aims of SOLAS, Chapter V, Regulation 22 and provides clear, objective requirements to help designers, builders and surveyors achieve safe bridge visibility and consistent regulatory interpretation for large yachts.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and intent
- Applies to large yachts ≥ 24 m; no normative references are listed in the document.
- Supports SOLAS V and addresses unconventional designs used in the yacht industry.
- Field of vision
- Specifies horizontal and vertical fields of vision, blind sectors and clear sectors from conning, docking, monitoring and steering positions.
- Requires a horizontal field of vision to the horizon (1 nmi) of 360° using not more than two positions within the bridge; alternatives (flybridge, remote camera or agreed options) are recognised where design constraints exist.
- Bridge construction and ergonomics
- Front window geometry - lower edge must not obstruct forward view; upper edge should permit horizon sight in standing posture even when pitching.
- Window inclination - front windows inclined “top out” between 10° and 25°; side/rear windows may follow similar limits; alternative “bottom out” inclination allowed up to 65° with measures to avoid reflections.
- Curved windows permitted provided optical distortion is checked (see test procedures).
- Console and framing - upper edges of navigational consoles and window frames must not disrupt required fields of vision; window breadth should be as large as practicable.
- Visibility aids and controls
- Rules on sunscreens, window tinting, removable screens and mitigation of glare/reflections.
- Testing and acceptance
- Test procedures cover design-stage checks, harbour acceptance tests and optical property tests for glass and window distortion.
Practical applications - who uses ISO 24482:2023
- Yacht designers and naval architects - to integrate compliant wheelhouse geometry early in design.
- Shipyards and builders - for production drawings, window selection and layout checks.
- Flag state surveyors and classification societies - to assess compliance with SOLAS-related visibility expectations.
- Owners, captains and bridge system integrators - for retrofits, bridge-system placement, remote camera solutions and operational safety (docking, lookout).
- Glass and window suppliers - to validate optical performance and distortion limits.
Related standards and references
- Based on IMO SOLAS Chapter V (Regulation 22) and IMO MSC circulars cited in the ISO introduction.
- Cross-references: ISO 8468 (alternative options for compliance) and IMO guidance documents mentioned in the standard’s introduction.
