ISO 25112:2010 selects the options appropriate for CALM using mobile wireless broadband (MWB) techniques conforming to IEEE 802.16, and specifies the management interface requirements. CALM links are required for quasi-continuous, prolonged and short communications between vehicles and the roadside, between vehicles, and between mobile equipment and fixed infrastructure points. Wherever practicable, ISO 25112:2010 has been developed by reference to suitable extant standards, adopted by selection. Required regional variations are provided. Application specific upper layers will not be included in ISO 25112:2010, but will be driven by application standards (which might not be technology specific).
Abstract
Overview
ISO 25112:2010 - Intelligent transport systems (ITS): Communications Access for Land Mobiles (CALM) - Mobile wireless broadband using IEEE 802.16 defines how mobile wireless broadband (MWB) technologies conforming to IEEE 802.16 (mobile WiMAX/WiBro) are adopted within the CALM framework. The standard selects appropriate IEEE 802.16 options for CALM, specifies management interface requirements, and mandates operation within the CALM architecture to support quasi-continuous, prolonged and short communications between vehicles, roadside infrastructure and fixed points. ISO 25112:2010 focuses on packet-based ITS communications and relies on existing standards where practicable.
Key topics and requirements
- CALM integration: Requires compliance with CALM system architecture, IPv6 networking, medium service access points and management (references to ISO 21217, ISO 21210, ISO 21218, ISO 24102).
- IEEE 802.16 adaptation: Selects options and procedures from IEEE 802.16 and RFC 5121 for IPv6 over 802.16 to make MWB media CALM-compliant.
- Management interface (MMAE): Defines the Medium Management Adaptation Entity (MMAE) service primitives used by the CALM Interface Manager (IME), including:
- MMAE-SetParam.request / confirm (e.g., connect/disconnect - paramValue 1 = connect, 2 = disconnect)
- MMAE-GetParam.request / confirm (paramNumber 1 = interface status; 2 = interface characteristics)
- MMAE-Notify.indication (status: 1 = disconnected, 2 = connected)
- MMAE GetParam.confirm returns fields such as ifStatus, interface characteristics (DataRate, Cost, ServiceType, Security) and a result code (1 = OK, 2 = no such media, 3 = unknown error)
- Session management: Procedures for establishment and termination of User Controlled, Continuous and Time Controlled sessions via CALM session rules and IEEE 802.16 connection steps (e.g., ranging, capability exchange, registration, creation).
- Medium access control & interface management: Requires MAC-level behavior and interface medium management consistent with CALM and IEEE 802.16.
- Conformance & testing: Includes test, marking, packaging and IP/patent declaration considerations for compliance.
Applications
ISO 25112:2010 is targeted at ITS use cases that require higher data rates and longer-range wireless connectivity:
- Vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications for safety messaging and collision avoidance
- Traffic management, probe-data collection and enforcement
- High-bandwidth services: video/image download, navigation updates, infotainment and multimedia multicast
- Persistent or long-duration sessions (quasi-continuous connectivity, handover between base stations)
Who should use this standard
- ITS architects and system designers integrating mobile WiMAX into CALM systems
- Vehicle telematics and on-board unit (OBU) manufacturers
- Network operators and service providers deploying MWB for transport services
- Test labs and compliance engineers verifying CALM/IEEE 802.16 interoperability
