Abstract
Overview
ISO 2554:1997 is an internationally recognized standard established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that specifies a method for determining the hydroxyl value of unsaturated polyester resins. It provides a critical chemical testing procedure enabling manufacturers and quality control laboratories to quantify the hydroxyl groups present in these thermosetting plastic materials. This value is essential for characterizing polyester resins, which are widely used in various industrial applications including composites, coatings, and adhesives.
This standard is essential for ensuring consistency and reliability in the testing of polyester resins, particularly in quality assurance and research settings. It complements other standards, such as ISO 2114, which deals with the determination of acid values necessary to calculate the hydroxyl value.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Application
ISO 2554:1997 applies specifically to unsaturated polyester resins but may also be used for saturated polyester resins and some alkyd resins. The method determines the hydroxyl value by measuring the difference between hydroxyl and acid indices, requiring prior determination of the total acid value. -
Definitions
- Hydroxyl Index: Amount of potassium hydroxide (mg) needed to neutralize acetic acid combined with 1 g of resin.
- Acid Index: Potassium hydroxide quantity to neutralize acids in the resin.
- Total Acid Index: Neutralization of all terminal carboxyl groups and free acids in the resin.
-
Testing Principle
Hydroxyl groups in the resin are acetylated using acetic anhydride in ethyl acetate with toluene-4-sulfonic acid catalyst. Excess anhydride is hydrolyzed, and resulting acetic acid is titrated with methanolic potassium hydroxide. The hydroxyl value is calculated by considering titration volumes and acid indices. -
Reagents and Apparatus
High-purity analytical reagents including acetic anhydride, ethyl acetate, toluene, and pyridine-water mixtures are required. Lab equipment such as magnetic stirrers, burettes, thermostated water baths, analytical balances, and potentiometric titration setups are specified. -
Procedure
The method involves sample weighing, dissolution, reaction at 50°C, titration with an indicator or potentiometric method, and calculation of results. Repeatability is ensured by performing at least two determinations. -
Testing Accuracy and Reporting
Although interlaboratory precision data is not yet available, the method specifies acceptable variance limits between repeated tests. Detailed reporting guidelines ensure comprehensive recording of test conditions and results.
Applications
-
Polymer Quality Control
Determination of hydroxyl values is crucial for monitoring batch consistency and resin quality in manufacturing processes. -
Material Research and Development
Accurate hydroxyl measurement aids in modifying resin properties for targeted performance in composites, coatings, and molding applications. -
Regulatory Compliance and Certification
Following ISO 2554 ensures compliance with international standards, facilitating acceptance in global markets and consistency in product specifications. -
Industrial Optimization
Helps in fine-tuning curing reactions and compatibility assessments with other materials (e.g., crosslinkers, fillers).
