This document specifies safety requirements and test methods related to materials, safety, performance and consumer information for classified floating leisure articles for use on and in the water according to ISO 25649-1:2024. This document is applicable to Class D floating leisure articles for use on and in water according to ISO 25649-1:2024 regardless whether the buoyancy is achieved by inflation or inherent buoyant material. NOTE 1 Typical products forming Class D (see Figure A.1 and Figure A.2): — inflatable climbing structures on the water; — bouncing platforms; — inflatable slides; — water trampolines; — teeter totters; — obstacle courses. NOTE 2 Typical places for application: — pools; — lakes, ponds; — open sea; — sea shore (no offshore winds, no currents).
Abstract
Overview
ISO 25649-6:2024 - "Floating leisure articles for use on and in the water - Part 6" provides additional specific safety requirements and test methods for Class D devices. It applies to large, active-use floating leisure articles (for example, inflatable climbing structures, water trampolines, slides, obstacle courses) whether buoyancy is by inflation or inherent buoyant material. The standard complements ISO 25649-1:2024 and focuses on materials, safety, performance and consumer information for Class D floating leisure articles used in pools, lakes and nearshore sea areas.
Keywords: ISO 25649-6:2024, Class D floating leisure articles, safety requirements, test methods, water trampolines, inflatable climbing structures, buoyancy, re-embarkation.
Key Topics
This part of the ISO 25649 series covers technical and safety aspects including:
- Design and fixings: requirements and test methods for buckles, fixings and attachment hardware.
- Sizing and user limits: product sizing, admissible number of users, maximum load capacity and space-per-person metrics for trampolines.
- Components and valves: special requirements and tests for valves, stoppers and inflatable connections.
- In-water performance: floating stability (including residual buoyancy requirements for taller structures), buoyancy validation and performance under asymmetric loading.
- User safety features: carrying handles, climbing aids, re-embarkation aids and safety pads for trampolines and platforms.
- Operational constraints: anchorage, required water depth, horizontal safety distances, visibility and repair kit provisions.
- Durability: springs, corrosion protection and overall mechanical durability for repetitive active use.
- Module-specific rules: requirements for swings, extra-large modules (>5 m height) and pool-specific modular arrangements.
- Consumer information: mandatory instructions, warnings and safe-use guidance tied to ISO 25649-2.
Applications
ISO 25649-6:2024 is intended for practical use by:
- Manufacturers and designers of inflatable and buoyant play structures to design and certify Class D devices.
- Test laboratories and conformity assessors implementing the specified test methods for safety and performance.
- Water park operators, pool managers and event organizers to verify installation, anchorage, layout, water depth and user limits.
- Regulators and procurement teams specifying safety requirements for public or commercial aquatic leisure equipment.
- Repair and maintenance personnel for guidance on repair kits, component replacement and corrosion protection.
Related Standards
- ISO 25649-1:2024 (classification, general requirements)
- ISO 25649-2:2024 (consumer information)
- ISO 25649-3:2024 (Class A devices)
- EN 913:2018 and EN 13138-3:2021 (related safety/test references)
ISO 25649-6:2024 helps ensure large floating leisure articles are safe, durable and accompanied by clear consumer information - critical for reducing drowning, entrapment and collision risks in active water-play environments.
