ISO 26429-10:2009 provides the definition of a single MXF file design for Stereoscopic Picture content wrapping. ISO 26429-10:2009 also defines a new Composition Playlist (CPL) extension element to reference such Stereoscopic Picture Track Files.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 26429-10:2009 - Digital cinema (D-cinema) packaging, Part 10: Stereoscopic picture track file defines a standardized MXF track-file design for stereoscopic (3D) picture content and an extension to the Composition Playlist (CPL) to reference those files. Adopted from SMPTE 429-10-2008, this standard ensures interoperable wrapping, indexing and CPL metadata for left/right eye frame-paired stereoscopic essence used in D-cinema distribution.
Key topics & technical requirements
- Single MXF Stereoscopic Picture Essence Stream: left and right eye frames are interleaved as ordered pairs (left first, right second) in a single MXF file.
- MXF wrapping rules: the Stereoscopic Picture Track File is wrapped according to SMPTE 429-3 (MXF track-file conventions) with the specific constraint that a KLV Fill item must not be used between left/right frames of the same pair.
- Picture Essence Descriptor & Sub-Descriptor: the Picture Essence Descriptor must strongly reference a Stereoscopic Picture Essence Sub-Descriptor (see Annex A) to identify the file as conformant stereoscopic content.
- Sample Rate and Edit Rate mapping: the Picture Essence Descriptor’s Sample Rate equals the gross frame rate (frames per second). The MXF Edit Rate is defined as half the Sample Rate because edit units represent left/right frame pairs. (Example in the standard: Sample Rate = 48 → Edit Rate = 24.)
- Indexing: Index tables use edit units that correspond to left/right frame pairs, enabling decoders to determine the first frame (left eye) unambiguously at any position.
- CPL extension - MainStereoscopicPicture: defines an XML element and namespace (http://www.smpte-ra.org/schemas/429-10/2008/Main-Stereo-Picture-CPL) to reference stereoscopic track files in Composition Playlists. When used, the MainStereoscopicPicture element must be present instead of MainPicture to prevent accidental 2D playback. CPL asset Edit Rate and Frame Rate must match the underlying track file.
Applications and who uses it
ISO 26429-10:2009 is used by:
- Post‑production and mastering houses creating D‑cinema 3D packages
- Digital cinema integrators and content distributors preparing MXF/JPEG‑2000 DCPs
- Cinema server and playback system developers ensuring correct 3D playback and indexing
- Software vendors building packagers, validators and QC tools for stereoscopic D‑cinema
- Standards and archive professionals managing interoperable 3D content delivery
Practical benefits include consistent 3D file interchange, reliable CPL referencing for theatre workflows, and clear metadata rules to avoid erroneous 2D projection.
