ISO 26429-8:2009 specifies the data format for interchange of a Packing List for D-cinema applications. The electronic or physical form of a complete package described by a Packing List is beyond the scope of ISO 26429-8:2009.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 26429-8:2009 - Digital cinema (D‑cinema) packaging - Part 8: Packing list specifies the data format for interchange of a Packing List used in D‑cinema distribution. It defines an XML-based metadata document that lists and uniquely identifies all assets in a distribution package (composition playlists, picture/sound/subtitle essence files and other related assets). The standard is equivalent to SMPTE 429‑8‑2007 and is intended for interoperable exchange of package contents; the electronic or physical form of the complete package is outside its scope.
Key topics and technical requirements
- XML representation & schema: Structures are represented in XML and constrained by an XML Schema; a unique XML namespace is required (http://www.smpte-ra.org/schemas/429-8/2007/PKL).
- PackingList elements: Core elements include Id, IssueDate, Issuer, Creator, GroupId (optional), AssetList, and optional AnnotationText, IconId, Signer and Signature.
- Asset structure: Each asset entry contains elements such as Id, AnnotationText (optional), Hash (e.g., SHA‑1 referenced), Size, Type, and OriginalFileName (optional).
- Security and identifiers: References normative standards for XML‑Signature, UUIDs, URI syntax, and SHA hashing (see normative references). XML Signature support and signer/signature elements enable integrity and non‑repudiation of the packing list.
- Interchange semantics: The packing list is a manifest-style XML document used to reference assets by unique Ids and provide metadata for distribution and verification.
Practical applications and users
- Who uses it: D‑cinema post‑production teams, digital distribution houses, mastering facilities, theatre playback server vendors, and software developers building packaging/ingest tools.
- Use cases:
- Creating interoperable manifests for Digital Cinema Packages (DCPs).
- Sending full or partial replacements (e.g., a single reel update) while referencing previously delivered assets.
- Enabling automated ingest and verification pipelines at exhibition sites (theatres, cinemas).
- Supporting asset integrity checks and signed manifests for secure content distribution.
- Benefits: Consistent asset identification, easier automation of ingest workflows, improved interoperability between studios, distributors and exhibitors.
