This document specifies two methods of test for the determination of the density of solid vulcanized and thermoplastic rubbers. Such determinations are of importance in the control of the quality of a rubber compound and in the calculation of the mass of rubber required to produce a given volume of material. This document does not cover the determination of the relative density of rubber, which is the ratio of the mass of a given volume of rubber to the mass of an equal volume of pure water at a given temperature.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 2781:2018 - "Rubber, vulcanized or thermoplastic - Determination of density" specifies two standardized laboratory methods for measuring the density of solid vulcanized and thermoplastic rubbers. The standard covers test principles, required apparatus, sample preparation and conditioning, calibration, test temperatures, procedures (Methods A and B), result expression and reporting. It is intended for quality control, material specification and mass/volume calculations for rubber products. Note: ISO 2781:2018 does not cover relative density expressed as a ratio to pure water.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Density determination for solid vulcanized and thermoplastic rubbers (not relative density).
- Two methods:
- Method A - buoyancy/immersion technique using an analytical balance with a pan straddle; measures mass in air and apparent mass immersed in water.
- Method B - density bottle technique for samples that must be cut into small pieces (e.g., narrow tubing, cable insulation).
- Apparatus: analytical balance (±1 mg), balance pan straddle, 250 cm3 beaker, density bottle; suitable suspension filament or sinker when required.
- Test pieces: smooth, crack-free samples of at least 2.5 g; minimum two test pieces.
- Temperature & conditioning:
- Standard laboratory temperature: 23 °C ± 2 °C or 27 °C ± 2 °C for both sample conditioning and test.
- Condition test pieces for at least 3 h at standard temperature; minimum 16 h between forming and testing; other time limits specified for comparable results.
- Calibration & precision:
- Calibration schedule in Annex B; precision data in Annex A.
- Normative references: ISO 18899:2013 (calibration guide) and ISO 23529 (sample preparation/conditioning).
- Procedure details: use freshly boiled and cooled distilled/deionized water; remove air bubbles (detergent trace or brief alcohol dip may be permitted); account for filament/sinker mass; use alternate non-interacting liquids if sample density <1 Mg/m3.
Applications and users
ISO 2781:2018 is used by:
- Rubber compounders and formulators for quality control and batch consistency.
- Test laboratories and certification bodies for material verification.
- Manufacturers of seals, O-rings, tubing, hoses, cable insulation and molded rubber goods to calculate mass from volume and to detect porosity or filler variation.
- R&D teams characterizing material density changes due to fillers, voids or processing.
Practical uses include batch acceptance testing, material specification compliance, production mass calculations and comparison of material lots.
