This document specifies a test method for the determination of the full thickness tensile strength in the longitudinal direction and the elongation at the reference force and breaking point of conveyor belts having a textile carcass. The method can also be used for the determination of full thickness tensile strength in the transverse direction and the elongation at the breaking point, for use when the manufacturer is requested by the purchaser to state values for these properties. This document does not apply to light conveyor belts as described in ISO 21183‑1.

ISO 283:2023 - "Textile conveyor belts - Full thickness tensile strength, elongation at break and elongation at the reference load - Test method" specifies a laboratory procedure to determine the full-thickness tensile strength, elongation at break, and elongation at the reference force of conveyor belts with a textile carcass. The method covers longitudinal testing and, when requested, transverse tensile strength and elongation at break. It excludes light conveyor belts (see ISO 21183‑1).

- Initial grip distances vary by specimen type (e.g., Type A: 220 ± 10 mm; B & D: 415 ± 10 mm; C: 240 ± 10 mm).
- Reference force = one‑tenth of the nominal tensile strength × specimen width.
- Tensile strength (N/mm) = maximum force / specimen width; report arithmetic mean of three specimens.
- Elongation (%) at break and at reference force computed from gauge length change; report mean to one decimal place.
- Reporting: Include test method reference (ISO 283:2023), belt ID, specimen type, conditioning details, temperature/humidity, whether covers were present, and mean results.
