The determination is carried out as follows: Titration of an aliquiot portion of a sample solution with benzethonium chloride solution according to the direct two-phase titration procedure describes in ISO 2271. Hydrolysis by refluxing under alkaline conditions of a second aliquot portion of the sample solution. Titration of unhydrolyzed anionic-active matter with benzethonium chloride solution as before. Calculation of the contents of hydrolyzable and non-hydrolyzable anionic-active matter from the results obtained.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 2869:1973 is an international standard issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that specifies a method for the determination of hydrolyzable and non-hydrolyzable anionic-active matter in detergents. This analytical standard is essential for laboratories and manufacturers in the detergent industry, providing a reliable procedure for analyzing surface active agents, specifically those that are hydrolyzable under alkaline conditions. The method involves titration using benzethonium chloride, following two-phase titration procedures, and enables precision in quantifying both hydrolyzable and non-hydrolyzable anionic-active substances.
Key Topics
- Surface Active Agents: Focus on anionic surfactants, which are common active components in detergents, including substances like dialkylsulphosuccinates and fatty acid glyceride sulphates.
- Hydrolyzable vs. Non-hydrolyzable Content: The standard distinguishes between components that break down under alkaline conditions and those that remain stable.
- Two-phase Titration Technique: Application of direct titration with benzethonium chloride according to ISO 2271.
- Alkaline Hydrolysis: Refluxing a sample under controlled alkaline conditions, allowing selective measurement of hydrolyzable matter.
- Result Calculation: Guidelines for calculating and reporting the relative amounts of hydrolyzable and non-hydrolyzable anionic-active matter by mass percentage or milli-equivalents per gram.
Applications
ISO 2869:1973 is widely applied in the following contexts:
- Quality Control in Detergent Manufacturing: Ensures consistency and compliance with product formulations by accurately determining the types and quantities of active ingredients.
- Product Development and Research: Supports R&D teams in analyzing new detergent formulas and modifying surfactant blends for optimal performance.
- Regulatory Compliance: Assists companies in meeting international regulatory requirements for surfactant composition and labeling.
- Chemical Analysis Laboratories: Offers standardized procedures for third-party testing and verification of surfactant properties in a variety of finished products.
- Environmental and Safety Assessments: Facilitates the identification and quantification of specific surfactants, crucial for environmental impact studies and safety evaluations.
Related Standards
Organizations and laboratories using ISO 2869:1973 may also reference the following related standards for comprehensive analysis and compliance:

Practical Value
Implementing ISO 2869:1973 allows detergent manufacturers and quality control laboratories to:
- Maintain high standards of product reliability and consistency.
- Precisely differentiate between hydrolyzable and non-hydrolyzable surfactant components.
- Streamline laboratory workflows by adhering to internationally recognized testing protocols.
- Provide transparent, reproducible data for industry partners and regulatory bodies.
- Strengthen product formulations for enhanced cleaning efficiency and customer satisfaction.
By following ISO 2869:1973, organizations ensure that detergent products meet both functional and regulatory demands for surfactant composition, supporting global trade and consumer trust in cleaning products.
