ISO 28927-6:2009 specifies a laboratory method for measuring hand-transmitted vibration emission at the handles of hand-held, power-driven rammers. It is a type-test procedure for establishing the magnitude of vibration in the gripping areas of a machine run under specified test conditions. It is intended that the results be used to compare different models of the same type of machine. ISO 28927-6:2009 is applicable to rammers, back-fill rammers, pawing rammers, sand rammers and stampers, driven pneumatically or by other means, intended for use in foundries, on building sites, etc., and with, for example, butts or peens made of cast iron or rubber, used for ramming of casting sand or in stamping work.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 28927-6:2009 - Hand‑held portable power tools: Test methods for evaluation of vibration emission - Part 6: Rammers specifies a laboratory, type-test method for measuring hand‑transmitted vibration at the handles of hand‑held rammers. The standard defines how to establish and report vibration magnitudes for rammers (including back‑fill, pawing, sand rammers and stampers) driven pneumatically or by other means and used in foundries, construction sites and similar environments. Results are intended for comparing different models of the same machine type.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and machine family - Applicability to rammers, stampers and similar percussive machines; examples of typical machine configurations are provided.
- Characterization of vibration - Measurement in three axes, reporting for both hand positions, and combination of directional components into a total vibration value.
- Measurement locations - Defined transducer positions near the gripping areas (between thumb and index finger) to minimise operator disturbance.
- Instrumentation - Requirements for transducers, mounting, frequency‑weighting filters, integration time, calibration and auxiliary equipment.
- Testing and operating conditions - Specified machine operating conditions, attached equipment/workpiece/task definitions, and use of an energy absorber to provide reproducible damping characteristics during tests.
- Measurement procedure and validity - Procedures for test runs, averaging, declaration and verification of the vibration emission value, and guidance on uncertainty.
- Reporting - Model test report format (Annex A) and methods for determining measurement uncertainty (Annex B). Annex C provides guidance on the design of energy absorbers for rammers.
- Key note on interpretation - Type‑test values are representative of the upper quartile of typical use; for low emission values, ISO 28927-6 recommends using 2.5 m/s2 as a conservative estimate for real working conditions.
Applications and users
Who uses ISO 28927-6:2009:
- Manufacturers of rammers and stampers for product development and comparative performance claims.
- Independent test laboratories performing type tests and issuing declared vibration emission values.
- Occupational health and safety professionals and procurement teams evaluating equipment for vibration exposure risk.
- Standards developers and certification bodies referencing reproducible lab methods.
Practical uses:
- Benchmarking vibration performance between models.
- Supporting compliant product declarations and CE/market claims.
- Informing selection of tools to reduce hand‑arm vibration exposure in workplaces.
